A guide to managing speed on the roads in Abu Dhabi

The Permanent Technical Committee for Abu Dhabi Technical Standards of the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council has approved the Abu Dhabi Guidelines for Road Speed ​​​​Management, which provide practical steps to assess, review and standardize the application of speeds on existing and new roads, in addition to identifying engineering procedures that comply with the proposed speeds.

This is in a move aimed at achieving the highest level of safety and security on the emirate’s roads, in collaboration with the Joint Committee for Road Safety in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, which is chaired by the Department of Municipalities and Transport and includes membership of the Abu Dhabi General Command police, the integrated transport center and the Ministry of Health.

This manual was developed and published under the supervision of the Joint Road Safety Committee with the participation of a team of specialist road safety engineers at the Integrated Transport Center and road safety specialists from the Abu Dhabi General Command and the Department of Municipalities and Transport and Associated Municipalities.

The importance of this guidance is that it is in line with the zero vision strategy that the Joint Committee on Road Safety has previously launched, which aims to reduce the number of road fatalities to zero.

The Joint Road Safety Committee explained that the importance of this guidance is highlighted by the fact that it constitutes one of the most important initiatives of the zero vision strategy, which recommended the necessity of having a clear method of speed management on the emirate’s roads and determining safe speeds that take regard for all road users, adds that the guidance contains practical steps to assess and review the speed on existing roads. And new, in addition to speed control tools in accordance with technical standards and traffic control requirements.
