The Center for Contemporary Art’s 2023 International Juried Exhibition is on view through March 3.

Juror Esteban del Valle selected 53 pieces from 773 entries from 269 artists from across the United States and Canada, Dubai, London, and Moscow.

According to a statement released by The Center for Contemporary Arts, “The quality of the entries was very high, and made for a challenging task for the juror.”

New Jersey artists selected for the exhibition are: Ry An of Blairstown, Christine Barney of Jersey City, Elise Dodeles of Lambertville, Jacqueline Buck Donadeo of Manasquan, Steven Epstein of Edison, Lenore Knoller of Basking Ridge, Deborah L. Morris of Jersey City, Charles Mulford of Chatham, Jeanine Pennell of Stockton, Angela Pilgrim of Newark, DeAnn L. Prosia of Morristown, Christine Sauerteig-Pilaar of Oak Ridge, Timothy Simmons of Newark, Barbara Wallace of Elizabeth, and Andrew Werth of Princeton Junction.

Three artists were awarded cash prizes:

  • First Prize: Linda Whitney of Valley City, North Dakota
  • Second Prize: Jo Cosme of Seattle, Washington
  • Third Prize: Kevin Arnold of Rudy, Arkansas

When speaking about his selection process Esteban del Valle wrote, “When it came to choosing the final works and the awards for this exhibition, I was drawn to artwork that reflected a deep interest and dedication to the medium accompanied by a strong sense of creative ambition. Creative ambition can manifest in different ways from inventing complex systems, to pushing the boundaries of material and skill, to the desire to use the medium to address content much larger than the artist themselves. The selected artworks displayed this sensibility while infusing the medium and/or process with their content, resulting in strong works that often opened up a broader conversation about the world we live in.”

Del Valle is a Brooklyn-based interdisciplinary artist from Chicago. He received his M.F.A. from Rhode Island School of Design and has exhibited his work and produced murals internationally. Del Valle has been the recipient of several visual arts residencies and fellowships including the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, the Fine Arts Work Center, Smack Mellon Artist Studio Program, and The Toby Devan Lewis Fellowship
