ROME, 28th November, 2022 (WAM) — The death toll following this weekend’s storm on the southern Italian island of Ischia rose to seven late on Sunday, German press agency (dpa) reported.

Five people remain missing, but rescuers say they plan to keep the search going. Divers are checking vehicles washed into the sea for bodies. Some 150 firefighters and around 220 police officers were deployed to help with the rescue work.

Authorities have also had 230 people removed from their homes and put up in hotels or other more secure structures for safety reasons.

The storm hit the island, which lies about 15 kilometres from the mainland and about 50 kilometres from Naples, early on Saturday and caused heavy damage, especially in the coastal towns of Casamicciola and Lacco Ameno in the north of the island.

The prefectural authorities in Naples corrected earlier information on the number of injured, reporting four hurt, one of them seriously. An earlier report put the number of injured at 13.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called a meeting of ministers in Rome at which a year-long state of emergency was declared for the island with the aim of freeing up funds to deal with the disaster.
