Amid the World Environment Day, the Emirates airline has used its old advertising billboards and turned them into 200 school bags and 125 shopping bags for children and adults in South Africa.

Billboards were collected from all over South Africa, and more than 500 square feet of PVC Flex material have been turned into firm, waterproof and durable bags in cooperation with entrepreneur Raymond Phiri, from Motion Bags, and the company Just Bags.

“This is a very dear project for me because I know how it is when you don’t have a school bag while other kids have them,” said Raymond Phiri, owner of Motion Bags. School bags were donated to Emfundisweni primary school in Alexandria, Johannesburg, and Emirates filled them with school supplies and books from their in-flight entertainment program for children.

In addition to these activities, Emirates is committed to its ecologically responsible business strategy and manages one of the youngest and most efficient fleets in the world, which, among other things, represents a significant investment in reducing environmental footprint. The company also continuously pursues sustainable solutions in the area of environment preservation.

In 2017, Emirates introduced 100% recycled plastic bottles using ecoTHREAD ™ technology, whose production, according to estimates, will make use of 88 million plastic bottles from landfills until the end of 2019. Additionally, the airline in its most modern Emirates Engineering Center in Dubai uses dry cleaning technology to clean its fleet, saving millions of litres of water each year, and uses solar panels to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 800 tonnes per year.
