SHARJAH, 25th May, 2022 (WAM) — Speakers at a panel discussion organised by the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah, as part of its participation in the 31st edition of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, valued the attention paid by H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, for the protection of the Arabic Language, embodied in the completion of the Arabic Historical Dictionary project.

The symposium, which was held at the youth platform of the exhibition under the theme ‘The Role of the Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language in Documenting the Evolution of Terminology through the Ages and Migratory Words’, was attended by Dr. Muhammad Safi Al Mosteghanemi, Secretary-General of Arabic Language Academy (ALA) in Sharjah, and Executive Director of the Arabic Historical Dictionary.

Dr. Al Mosteghanemi opened his participation in the symposium by noting that the rationale for working in the historical dictionary of the Arabic language distinguishes it from other ancient dictionaries, due to its role in chronicling the words of the Arabic language and the context in which their meanings developed in different eras, to include 18 centuries.

As for Dr. Al Sheikh, he reviewed the unique characteristics of the dictionary that enhance its scientific and cognitive importance, most notably the temporal extension covered by the dictionary to include Arabic words in the pre-Islamic stage by 400 years.
