From establishment to electoral empowerment: SCC’s transformative journey under the aegis of Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi.
In a progressive step that aligns with the vision of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, the Ruler of Sharjah, the Sharjah Consultative Council (SCC) continues to redefine democratic involvement, enhancing transparency and fortifying the bridge between governance and its citizens.
Ali Mehd Al Suwaidi, the SCC’s Chairman, extolled the monumental decision to split the council seats between direct elections and nominations. This innovative move amplifies citizens’ voices, promoting diversity in perspectives, and assuring Sharjah’s inhabitants an active role in crafting their future.
Since its inauguration in 1999, the SCC has grown from strength to strength. A landmark moment came in 2015 when direct polls allowed Sharjah’s denizens to become an intrinsic part of the emirate’s developmental narrative. These elections have bolstered the SCC’s stature as a pivotal institution, acting as the conduit between the citizenry and the Ruler, and celebrating the revered principle of Shura.
Al Suwaidi underscored the council’s consistent dedication to fostering policies that prioritize the wellbeing of Sharjah’s people. By enacting modern legislation and providing invaluable recommendations, the SCC aims to meet evolving challenges and drive the emirate’s development forward.
Over the past 24 years, the SCC has convened in 370 plenary sessions, deliberated on 178 topics of paramount public interest, and passed a commendable 125 bills. Their exhaustive endeavors have been categorized into four defining phases:
- Establishment Era (1999-2005): Marked by the creation of the Sharjah Executive and Consultative Councils.
- Phase of Expansion (2005-2015): A period of amplified governmental outreach, marked by the foundation of nine municipal councils and municipalities in Sharjah, furthering legislative sophistication.
- Parliamentary Transformation (2015): A year that transformed SCC’s essence, integrating the common citizen into the decision-making process via electoral involvement.
- Reinforcing Democracy (2019): This segment saw profound legislations and discussions on pivotal subjects impacting the citizenry, buttressing Sharjah’s parliamentary experience.
Calling upon citizens to uphold a constructive mindset in the electoral process, Al Suwaidi emphasizes selecting representatives who truly reflect society’s aspirations. The SCC, he says, is a perpetual ally to every citizen, functioning as the very “voice and tongue” of the people, as envisioned by the Ruler of Sharjah.
The council’s unwavering commitment stretches across the emirate’s vast expanse – from Sharjah City to Dibba Al Hisn, and every region in between. Addressing crucial sectors from the economy to education, the SCC remains a testament to Sharjah’s vision of cooperative progress and sustainable development.
As Sharjah stands at the cusp of a new electoral chapter, the SCC reiterates its dedication to nurturing quality living for its residents, strengthening governance, and championing the Ruler’s progressive vision.
