Larsen & Toubro and Power China win $500m UAE freight contract

Indian engineer Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Chinese contractor Power China International have been awarded a $500m contract to design and build freight-handling facilities for seven stations in the second phase of the UAE’s Etihad Rail project.

The two companies will design and build the systems that load and unload trains on the line’s cargo handling systems with associated civil and structural works, bulk material storage facilities, general cargo and container handling facilities.

Etihad is a $25b scheme to build a rail system for the UAE. It was restarted in March 2018 after being mothballed in January 2016.

The second stage will be a 605km line between the Saudi Arabian border and the emirate of Fujairah, linking that emirate’s main population centres and transport hubs. When complete, it is expected to increase the amount of freight carried from seven million to more than 50 million tonnes a year.

This contract completes the contract-awarding process for the second phase of the three-phase project.
