There was a time when Australian fashion labels that wanted to sell to the Middle East had to go to Paris – and pray.
But as homegrown brands, some of which are showing at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia, build their sales in the Middle East, several players are responding by bridging the gap between the regions.
A buyer from one of the region’s most influential retailers, Al Tayer, is in Sydney this week for the shows, while airline Etihad is helping Australian fashion labels more easily reach wealthy Middle East consumers.
Luke Sales and Anna Plunkett, of Romance Was Born, said their sales in the Middle East had grown steadily over five years.
“We were initially in smaller boutiques but recently we have been working with some of their key department stores,” they said.
