UAE Family Visas Extended to Over 18s

The UAE Cabinet have announced major reforms to the country’s visa rules, easing the pressure on families whose teenaged children are making the transition from school to university or employment, as well as those who are unsure of their next move after finishing school.

Up until these changes were put in place to the UAE visa scheme (announced on 18th April 2022), parents could sponsor their sons until age 18 and then apply for a three-year student visa for a period of three years, provided they were studying in a UAE university. Unmarried daughters were, and continue to be, permitted to remain on their parents’ sponsorship indefinitely.

Parents may now sponsor their sons up until the age of 25, easing this transition period significantly for many families. With numbers of international students choosing UAE universities increasing, the continuity of residency visa that this will allow for will likely be a welcome move for many.

This will likewise mean that male university graduates can initially remain on their parents’ sponsorship as they seek employment, with unmarried female graduates continuing to enjoy this option without age limit. For children of determination, parents may sponsor them regardless of their age.

Of interest to passport holders not able to receive a visa on arrival, with teenagers looking to study or work overseas after leaving school, a 5-year multi-entry visit visa has been introduced. Those planning to be regular visitors to the UAE, of any nationality, can apply for this visa online, at a cost of 650AED (plus a 50AED service fee), with certain conditions being applicable, notably the submission of a bank statement of the last six months with a minimum balance of $4,000 and medical insurance valid for the UAE.
