ROME, 4th July, 2022 (WAM) — At least six people have died after a glacier collapsed in the Dolomites in northern Italy, regional president Maurizio Fugatti said on Sunday evening.
German press agency (dpa) quoted President Fugatti as saying that up to 14 people were also injured when a large chunk broke off the Marmolata mountain glacier and fell into the valley below. Five helicopters and several dog teams were deployed to search for victims buried under masses of ice, snow and rock.
A person seriously injured was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Treviso. Eighteen people who had been waiting to be rescued where the glacier had broken off were also flown down into the valley by helicopter.
Rescuers fear more victims will be found. A dozen people were still missing on Sunday evening.
