‘Consortium led by EDF successfully wins bid for 1.5-GW Al Ajban solar project’

by Dubaiforum

Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has partnered with EDF Renewables and Korea Western Power Company (KOWEPO) to develop the 1.5-GW Al Ajban solar PV project in Abu Dhabi. This consortium, with UAE-based Masdar as a local shareholder, has signed a power purchase agreement with EWEC. The project is expected to be operational by the third quarter of 2026 and will provide electricity to 160,000 households in the UAE.

Situated in Al Ajban, the solar park will help reduce the emirate’s carbon emissions by 2.4 million metric tonnes per year. This initiative is part of Abu Dhabi’s rapid expansion of solar energy deployment, with the 2-GW Al Dhafra solar park already commissioned and plans for the 1.5 GW Al-Khazna solar park in progress.

By 2030, EWEC aims to supply over 50% of Abu Dhabi’s electricity from renewable and clean energy sources. They project to add 1.4 GW of new solar PV annually from 2027 to 2037. The Al Ajban solar project is a significant milestone in achieving these renewable energy goals in the UAE.

Furthermore, EWEC’s plan to add 1.4 GW of new solar PV annually from 2027 to 2037 demonstrates their commitment to sustainable energy practices.
