Dubai Maritime City Achieves Major Milestone with Enhanced Capacity for 1,000 Vessels Annually
In a significant move to bolster its standing as a global maritime hub, Dubai Maritime City (DMC) has unveiled the completion of extensive infrastructure upgrades aimed at expanding its ship handling capacity to an impressive 1,000 vessels per year. This development comes as part of a broader strategy by the emirate to enhance its maritime industry and align with the ambitious goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33.
The upgrades include state-of-the-art enhancements such as the introduction of 6,000-tonne and 3,000-tonne ship lifts, which have more than doubled DMC’s vessel handling capabilities—from 400 to 1,000 ships annually. These improvements are not just about numbers; they allow for the efficient management of complex shipbuilding and repair projects, a crucial aspect for the growing maritime economy in the region. In fact, in the early months of 2024 alone, DMC has already serviced 296 vessels, reflecting a notable 16% increase in dry berth occupancy over the same period last year.
A Hub of Excellence
Established on a sprawling 249-hectare waterfront, DMC is vital for preserving Dubai’s rich seafaring heritage. It serves as a hub for luxury yacht and commercial shipbuilding and repair services, drawing maritime professionals and enthusiasts from around the world. By enhancing its infrastructure, DMC aims to not only increase operational efficiency but also attract international shipbuilding and repair companies, reinforcing Dubai’s reputation as a premier maritime destination.
An inauguration ceremony recently marked the completion of these upgrades, with key figures in the maritime industry in attendance. Ahmed Al Hammadi, Chief Operating Officer of DMC, and Nils Rolland, Chief Operating Officer of Syncrolift, were among the prominent officials that graced the event. The presence of other senior executives from Syncrolift and DP World highlighted the collaborative efforts critical to the completion of these ambitious upgrades.
A Commitment to Growth
Abdulla Bin Damithan, CEO and Managing Director of DP World GCC, emphasized the significance of these upgrades by stating, “The completion of these upgrades underscores our commitment to the growth of Dubai Maritime City. By enhancing our infrastructure, we are not only boosting vessel handling capacity but also attracting international shipbuilding and repair companies.” This sentiment was echoed by Nils Rolland, who noted, “Our partnership with DMC highlights our mutual dedication to advancing maritime infrastructure. These enhancements will give DMC a competitive edge, allowing it to serve a larger volume of vessels more efficiently.”
The upgrades don’t stop at improved ship lifts. DMC has signed an agreement for the construction of four sets of ship cradles, of which two are already operational. These cradles accommodate vessels weighing up to 6,000 tonnes and measuring 140 meters in length, thus increasing docking capacity by an additional 100 vessels annually.
Pioneering Sustainability
In addition to expanding capacity, DMC remains committed to sustainability—an increasingly vital consideration in today’s maritime landscape. The implementation of modern substations and shore power supply systems provides eco-friendly solutions that align with Dubai’s sustainability targets. Docked vessels will benefit from reliable power sources that eliminate the need for fossil fuel use while they are moored, reducing the overall environmental impact.
Moreover, DMC has initiated a maintenance management service agreement designed to ensure the ongoing efficiency of its ship lifting and transferring facilities. This proactive approach ensures that its critical infrastructure remains in top condition for years to come. A major rehabilitation project focusing on marine structures, including refurbishing steel components, aims to extend the lifespan of this vital infrastructure by an additional 15 years.
Looking Ahead
As DMC continues to innovate and expand, the implications for Dubai’s maritime sector are profound. By successfully positioning itself as a leader in maritime infrastructure, DMC not only secures economic benefits for Dubai but also enhances the emirate’s status on a global scale.
The completion of these infrastructure upgrades is a rhetorical question answered—Dubai is serious about its maritime aspirations. It’s clear that the future holds exciting opportunities for the maritime industry in the UAE, and Dubai Maritime City is set to play a pivotal role in this growth trajectory.
As we look ahead, it’s certain that these developments will enhance the region’s attractiveness for maritime professionals, leading to increased economic activity, job creation, and ultimately, a strengthened global maritime presence.
