The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Algernon Yau, emphasized the significance of e-commerce as a driving force for global trade and economic growth at the 13th World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial Conference in Abu Dhabi. He highlighted the importance of creating a conducive environment for international e-commerce to thrive.

Mr Yau advocated for the extension of the moratorium on customs duties on electronic transmission, citing its role in providing stability and predictability for e-commerce over the past 25 years. He urged WTO members to listen to the global business community’s calls for a predictable and tariff-free environment to support the continuous growth and success of digital trade.

In addition to his participation in the MC13 sessions, Mr Yau engaged in a bilateral meeting with the Federal Minister of Labour and Economy of Austria, Dr Martin Kocher. They discussed mutual interests and exchanged views on various issues.

Following the conference, Mr Yau is scheduled to travel to Manama, Bahrain on March 2. This highlights his commitment to promoting international trade and fostering collaboration on a global scale. The presence of key stakeholders like Mr Yau underscores the importance of leveraging e-commerce for sustainable economic development.

Friday, March 1, 2024, marks the conclusion of Mr Yau’s activities in Abu Dhabi, as he continues his engagements to support the growth and innovation of e-commerce on the world stage.
