Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), the foremost non-oil and gas industrial giant in the United Arab Emirates, has forged a ground-breaking alliance with the social enterprise Nadeera to unveil a cutting-edge aluminium recycling initiative within communities surrounding EGA’s Jebel Ali plant. The initiative, known as Yalla Return and created by Nadeera, presents an innovative platform designed to enhance consumer recycling practices.

This pioneering program leverages technology to catalyse community engagement, enticing and motivating recycling efforts through a seamlessly integrated mobile application. This app is linked to state-of-the-art, technology-enabled waste collection bins. The Yalla Return initiative is set to unfold its impact across approximately 4,000 households near the Jebel Ali site, creatively and innovatively fostering a culture of sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium, said, “Aluminium is an essential material for human progress, and too much is still thrown away including in communities that live right next to EGA’s plants. Nadeera will help us create more awareness on the importance of recycling among our neighbours, and I am pleased that this partnership means we are extending our cooperation with them.”

Recycling aluminium requires a staggering 95 per cent less energy than producing new metal, resulting in a significantly reduced carbon footprint. In a noteworthy development last year, EGA commenced the construction of the largest aluminium recycling plant in the United Arab Emirates.

EGA has led in fostering collaboration by establishing an Aluminium Recycling Coalition. This coalition brings together beverage can manufacturers, beverage producers, and waste management companies, aiming to enhance the recycling rates of aluminium cans in the UAE. Notably, the UAE witnesses consuming approximately 660 million beverage cans annually, with only around one-third currently being recycled.

Nadeera achieved finalist status in the inaugural season of EGA Ramp-up, a corporate social responsibility initiative by Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) designed to bolster entrepreneurship and contribute to the economic growth of the United Arab Emirates. EGA actively engages with and supports communities near its Dubai and Abu Dhabi operations through various corporate social responsibility programs.

These initiatives encompass sports tournaments, community clean-up drives, and recruitment campaigns. To maintain open communication, EGA has established a hotline, allowing members of neighbouring communities to reach out to the company with comments or concerns.
