Exploring the Essence of Humanity: An Artist Talk with SC Native YoYo Lander

by Dubaiforum

The Friends of African American Art & Culture (FAAAC), an affinity group of the Columbia Museum of Art (CMA), welcome home Sumter, SC, native artist YoYo Lander in a moderated conversation and review of pieces from her body of work. The program will be held at the CMA on Thursday, January 26, beginning with a reception and cash bar at 5:30 p.m. and talk at 6:30 p.m. The talk is free with museum membership or admission.

Through a meticulous process of strategically placing individually stained pieces of watercolor paper on watercolor paper, Lander’s works beautifully capture those small moments in the everyday lives of her subjects evoking emotion and creating human connection. “My aesthetic is visceral and expressive,” explains Lander. “My passion is to use body language as an introduction to context where one might find a sense of truth.”

Lander has been featured in both solo and group exhibitions domestically in California, Miami, and New York and internationally in South Africa, Sweden, United Arab Emirates, and Belgium. Upcoming, her works will be featured in a solo exhibition at Zidoun-Bossuyt in Paris, France, and a group exhibition at BRAFA Art Fair in Brussels, Belgium. Currently, Lander has two artworks featured in the permanent collection at the International African American Museum in Charleston, SC.

Following her early education in Sumter, SC, Lander earned a B.A. from Howard University and an M.F.A. from UCLA. She continues to live and work in Los Angeles.

The moderated conversation with Lander will be led by Ingrid O. McMillan, an FAAAC board member and formerly the curator of history, art and culture at the York W. Bailey Museum at Penn Center, Inc. in St. Helena Island, SC. Audience members will also have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A with the artist.

This program is supported by a General Operating and Support Grant from Central Carolina Community Foundation. Registration is preferred – https://www.columbiamuseum.org/events/faaac-presents-exploring-essence-humanity-artist-talk-yoyo-lander.
