FOCP Showcases Innovative Initiatives at World Cancer Congress in Geneva

Recently wrapping up the World Cancer Congress from September 17 to 19 in Geneva, Switzerland, the UAE-based Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP) showcased its impactful work in the fight against cancer. The organization’s commitment to supporting cancer patients and their families was elevated with the presentation of three critical abstracts to the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). These contributions not only highlighted FOCP’s unique role in cancer awareness and patient support but also illustrated its innovative approaches to fundraising and community engagement.

Shaping the Future of Cancer Care

Leading the delegation was Aisha Al Mulla, Director of FOCP, whose presence reflects the organization’s dedication to raise the bar in cancer care. Joining her were key figures like Rashid Al Ameeri, Head of Corporate Communications, who discussed the results of the organization’s unique Zakat and fundraising strategies, and Badr Qasem Al Jaaidi, Programme Manager, who presented insights from the “Relay for Life” initiative in Sharjah. Jamila Ibrahim, who heads up the Pink Caravan Mobile Clinic, rounded out the presentation team by sharing impactful stories from their Pink October campaign.

The Zakat campaign, which launched in 2013, has been a resounding success, raising an impressive AED 21.8 million to date and directly benefiting 2,190 cancer patients. In just the past year, the Zakat initiative alone generated AED 4.7 million—a testament to the entity’s strong community support and the importance of structured fundraising efforts.

Bridging Communities through Relay for Life

The second abstract focused on the “Relay for Life” initiative, a global movement that has taken root in Sharjah since 2017. Over 9,000 participants and more than 1,000 volunteers have rallied to the cause, raising AED 6 million that has gone directly towards the care of cancer patients. This event exemplifies the spirit of community resilience and solidarity, empowering people to fight together in the battle against cancer.

At the forefront of these initiatives is the astonishing impact of the Pink Caravan, which is part of the Pink October campaign aimed at breast cancer awareness. The medical team associated with the campaign has conducted thousands of free screenings, reinforcing the program’s emphasis on early detection—a vital aspect in the fight against cancer.

In 2023 alone, the Pink Caravan managed to raise AED 2.6 million, supported by 193 volunteers who offered an astonishing 1,530 hours to the initiative. The medical team contributed an additional 8,060 hours, further demonstrating the commitment of both medical professionals and community members in creating a positive impact on public health.

Global Collaboration and Future Strategies

During the Congress, FOCP engaged in strategic discussions with influential organizations like the American Cancer Society and teams involved in the Global Relay for Life initiative. These dialogues revolved around creating a collaborative framework for cancer prevention, enhancing research initiatives, and addressing disparities in patient care that often affect treatment outcomes and survival rates.

Al Mulla emphasized the significance of participating in global forums, stating, “The conference provided a crucial platform to share our expertise and broaden the global impact of our initiatives. It strengthens strategic partnerships with international organizations, drives innovation and sustainability in cancer patient support, and ensures we stay at the forefront of advancements in cancer research, prevention, and treatment.”

A Continuing Mission

The revelations from Geneva mark a pivotal moment for FOCP, positioning the UAE as a leader in cancer care and advocacy on a global scale. With increasing awareness and community engagement, initiatives like the Zakat campaign and Pink Caravan do not just help individuals navigate their personal cancer journeys but also galvanize entire communities into action.

As cancer awareness continues to take center stage, the insights gathered at the World Cancer Congress will undoubtedly influence the next steps for FOCP. The organization remains focused on cultivating partnerships, improving patient care, and advocating for innovative strategies that will leave a lasting impact on those affected by cancer.

The collaborative spirit exhibited at this event serves as a beacon of hope for patients and families struggling with cancer worldwide. As FOCP continues its essential work in the realm of cancer care, the organization sets an inspiring blueprint for others to follow.
