‘Hurricane-Proof Power Plant Successfully Opens’

by Dubaiforum

The recently inaugurated Green Barbuda project, developed by the UAE-Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund (UAE-CREF), is now operational in Antigua and Barbuda. This initiative, led by Masdar, aims to provide a hurricane-resistant power plant capable of withstanding winds up to 265km per hour, following the devastating impact of Hurricane Irma in 2017.

Designed to offer a reliable and sustainable power supply for the island, the climate-resistant plant integrates hybrid solar, batteries, and back-up diesel technologies. This setup aligns with the twin-island nation’s goal to derive 86% of its electricity from renewable resources by 2030.

The Green Barbuda project was officially launched on the island of Barbuda by key stakeholders such as Hon. Gaston Browne, the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, H.E. Hazza Ahmed Al Kaabi, the UAE Ambassador to the Republic of Cuba, and Ambassador Brian Challenger from the Ministry of Energy of Antigua and Barbuda, along with representatives from local and state bodies.

With a combination of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, batteries, and a diesel backup system, the Green Barbuda project aims to substantially reduce diesel fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. This project is part of the UAE-CREF initiative, which focuses on implementing renewable energy projects across the Caribbean to enhance energy access, reduce costs, and bolster climate resilience.

Funded by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), the million UAE-CREF collaboration was established to drive energy transformation in Antigua and Barbuda. This project underscores the UAE’s commitment to a low-carbon future and sustainable development in partnership with countries like Antigua and Barbuda and the CARICOM Development Fund (CDF).

Prime Minister Browne expressed his gratitude for the UAE’s assistance in achieving sustainable development and highlighted the transformative impact of the Green Barbuda project on the region. Browne emphasized the importance of reducing dependence on imported fuels and transitioning to renewable energy sources to combat climate change.

Masdar, a prominent clean energy company with a global presence, spearheaded the development of the Green Barbuda project and continues to lead the way in renewable energy initiatives. With ambitious plans to expand its renewable energy portfolio, Masdar remains committed to advancing clean energy technologies to address environmental challenges worldwide.

Overall, the Green Barbuda project represents a significant milestone in the UAE-CREF initiative, showcasing the potential of renewable energy to drive economic growth, resilience, and sustainable development in the Caribbean region.
