Meeting in Kano to amend Emirate Council law

by Dubaiforum

The Kano State House of Assembly has initiated the process to amend the Kano State Emirate Councils Act 2019. The decision was made during a plenary meeting chaired by Speaker Jibril Falgore. The motion, presented by Majority Leader Hon Lawan Hussaini, was supported by Dawakin Kudu representative Hon Shu’aibu Rabi’u with the goal to propel the state forward.

This move has stirred concerns among different groups. There are speculations that the amendment may lead to a return to a single emirate entity, undoing the creation of five emirates by former Governor Abdullahi Gaduje. During his administration, the Emirate Law was altered in 2019 to establish four additional Emirate Councils, resulting in the appointment of five first-class emirs and the removal of the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II.

In 2020, the Emirate Councils Amendment Act 2020 was approved to designate the Emir of Kano as the Chairman of the Council of Chiefs. Governor Abba Yusuf, along with Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, had promised to re-evaluate the Emirate Council issue during their campaigns. However, after assuming office, the current government reinstated Emir Sanusi’s portrait in the Government House’s Coronation Hall. Various groups have been advocating for his reinstatement and the revival of the old Emirate system.
