NEW YORK, 22nd June, 2022 (WAM) — Wall Street’s main indexes cut losses and the Nasdaq turned positive on Wednesday after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said the U.S. central bank is “strongly committed” to bringing down inflation that is running at a 40-year high, Reuters reported.

Powell told the Senate Banking Committee that ongoing increases in the policy rate would be appropriate, but the pace of the changes will continue to depend on the incoming data and the evolving outlook for the economy.

His comments came a week after the U.S. central bank raised interest rate by three-quarters of a percentage point, its largest increase since 1994. According to a Reuters poll, economists expect a similar move next month, followed by a half-percentage-point rise in September.

“It’s the dovish side of very hawkish. It’s a little bit less clear and a little bit less than totally committed,” said Thomas Simons, money market economist at Jefferies, New York.

“There isn’t this we-will-do-whatever-it-takes ironclad commitment that you might expect would be the predecessor to perhaps really aggressive rate hikes that might lead to a rapid decline in output.”

Wall Street has been whipsawed in recent sessions as traders debate if the market has found a bottom in the wake of a sharp selloff on concerns that aggressive policy moves by central banks could trigger a global economic slowdown.

At 10:15 ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 70.95 points, or 0.23 percent, at 30,459.30, the S&P 500 was down 0.51 points, or 0.01 percent, at 3,764.28, and the Nasdaq Composite was up 42.53 points, or 0.38 percent, at 11,111.83.

Oil prices fell more than US$5, with the global benchmark Brent hovering near US$110 per barrel. Energy sector slid 3.3 percent and was the top loser among the 11 major S&P sectors.

Declining issues outnumbered advancers for a 1.54-to-1 ratio on the NYSE. Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.01-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq.

The S&P index recorded one new 52-week highs and 38 new lows, while the Nasdaq recorded six new highs and 126 new lows.
