‘National biofuels policy introduced in UAE to support shift towards clean energy’

by Dubaiforum

The UAE recently unveiled the National Policy on Biofuels, which has been approved by the UAE Cabinet. This policy is a significant step towards promoting the country’s shift towards clean and sustainable energy sources.

The primary goal of this strategy is to diversify the energy mix and provide sustainable fuel alternatives. Developed by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) in collaboration with key partners in the public and commercial sectors, the policy aims to reduce carbon emissions by increasing the consumption of biodiesel by 20% by 2050. It also targets a 75% reduction in the carbon footprint of diesel cars through the full adoption of biodiesel.

UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, emphasized that the National Policy on Biofuels will play a crucial role in the country’s decarbonization efforts. This initiative is aligned with the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 and will promote the implementation of circular economy principles across various sectors, including infrastructure, mobility, and manufacturing.

MoEI, in collaboration with its partners, will establish regulations and controls to oversee the distribution of biofuels, set standards for production and utilization, and implement criteria for biofuel production within the UAE. Additionally, this policy aligns with the objectives of the National Energy and Water Demand-side Management Program and the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative.

Ali Khalifa Alshamsi, Director General of the Emirates General Petroleum Corporation – Emarat, highlighted that the adoption of the National Policy on Biofuels is a strategic move that will support the UAE’s leadership in clean energy production and source diversification. It also aims to explore alternatives to fossil fuels, enhance energy supply, and contribute to the nation’s sustainability and climate action goals.
