The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has named Mohamed Abushahab as its new ambassador to the United Nations, replacing Lana Nusseibeh. Abushahab, who previously served as the deputy UN ambassador, presented his credentials to Secretary General Antonio Guterres and engaged in discussions on enhancing cooperation between the UAE and the UN, especially in light of growing tensions in the Middle East.

During the meeting, Guterres praised the UAE for its role as a consensus builder at the UN, noting its significant contributions at the Security Council and on the international stage. Abushahab conveyed greetings from UAE leaders and emphasized the importance of the UN in addressing global challenges.

Abushahab affirmed the UAE’s commitment to international cooperation and highlighted the country’s initiatives at the UN, such as promoting tolerance, empowering women, leveraging artificial intelligence for sustainable development, and leading climate action efforts. With a background in diplomacy and international policy, Abushahab previously served as the ambassador to Belgium, the EU, and Luxembourg, as well as holding key positions within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

His expertise in climate and clean energy policy, including leading roles in international climate change negotiations and clean energy forums, positions him well to advance the UAE’s agenda at the UN. Abushahab expressed his determination to build on past achievements and strengthen the UAE’s presence in global initiatives for a more sustainable and inclusive world.
