Saudi university students showcase technological innovations at Future Disruptors Competition

Undergraduate students in Saudi Arabia demonstrates outstanding technological innovations at the Future Disruptors Competition alongside with LEAP in Riyadh.

Alongside with LEAP, the visionary tech event in the MENA region that has just concluded, the Software AG-initiated Future Disruptors Competition applauds the winning student team for its technological innovation.

Future Disruptors Competition is the region-wide student program in collaboration with Saudi Arabia’s Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) for undergraduate students. The program aims to strengthen digital skills for a digitally empowered future workforce. The winning innovators will be offered the opportunity to intern at Software AG’s IoT centers in Saudi Arabia and Germany.

The three shortlisted teams, out of 38 in total, showcase their IoT-AI-ML innovations, results of an extensive six months of trainings and workshops led by Software AG experts, at LEAP 2023.

“We are ecstatic to have won the second edition of Future Disruptors Program Software AG for the Saudi Arabia edition for our waste management solution. While we are still reeling from last evening’s gala event and the adrenaline from it, we feel that this is only the starting point of our journey to come,” Yaser Almasri, winner of this year’s competition, says, “Software AG has provided a stepping-stone to our careers like no other. With their recognition, we have added zeal, confidence and motivation to make a difference to lives with sustainable solutions. They have inspired us with an ambition ‘extraordinaire’.”

Almasri is a student from the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals. His winning project, NAQAA, is a waste management prototype. It will help in reducing the overall travel kilometers driven by the truck; thus, minimizing efforts, fuel consumption, and CO2 emissions.

Software AG’s Rami Kichli shares his thoughts on why it is imperative for them to nurture fresh talents and empower them. “Saudi Arabia’s future is being rooted on robust technology and an able work force to create a future ready country that will rub shoulders with the world through highly advanced and sustainable offerings.”

Under this year’s theme “Transform, Evolve and Simplify”, the program receives an overwhelming response from over nine universities, 204 students comprising of a total of 38 teams.

“The Future Disruptors Program has been a fulfilling six-month journey and I am eager to use the knowledge and skills I have acquired to advance myself and support my nation in innovative solutions,” Shahad Abahussain, finalist of the competition, says. Abahussain and his team designed Circlight, an IoT bracelet dedicated to boost public safety. “I look forward to bringing this to life, on a larger scale, with the support of the ecosystem,” he adds.

Future Disruptors Program is an annual program started in 2020 for undergraduate students with chapters in UAE and Saudi Arabia. The program aims to nurture innovation by bridging the gap between current developments in the corporate world with increasing expectations of the “digitally-native” and “sustainable-conscious” citizens of tomorrow. Students are encouraged to address real-world challenges through new and emerging technologies such as IoT, AI and machine learning based innovative models. The program empanels advocates of leading organizations in the region as members of the jury who run a rigorous judging process to award the most deserving idea as part of the region’s innovation agenda.
