Sharjah Waste-to-Energy Plant Achieves a Landmark Milestone

The Sharjah Waste-to-Energy plant, a revolutionary facility operated through a joint venture among BEEAH, Masdar, and Veolia, has surpassed a significant milestone by processing 500,000 tonnes of waste since its inauguration in 2023. This facility stands as the first commercial-scale waste-to-energy plant in the region, marking a substantial step toward environmental sustainability in Sharjah and the wider UAE.

The plant plays a critical role in Sharjah’s ambitious goal of achieving zero waste to landfill, transforming hard-to-recycle waste into low-carbon energy while effectively complementing the integrated recycling initiatives already in place across the emirate. This not only mitigates the environmental burden posed by waste accumulation but also harnesses energy that is pivotal in aiding the nation’s sustainability agenda.

With an impressive capacity to generate 30 megawatts (MW) of low-carbon energy per hour, the Sharjah facility has the potential to power approximately 28,000 homes. It also contributes to the reduction of carbon emissions, offsetting up to 450,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. These efforts align seamlessly with the UAE’s commitment to sustainability and clean energy, further reinforcing the nation’s position as a regional leader in these vital sectors.

To commemorate this milestone, key representatives from BEEAH, Masdar, and Veolia gathered alongside officials from the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA) and the Sharjah Municipality. They convened at BEEAH Headquarters and conducted a site visit to the Waste-to-Energy plant to observe its operations firsthand.

The successful processing of 500,000 tonnes of waste not only represents a significant achievement in waste management but also highlights the facility’s broader environmental impact. Since its operational debut, the plant has effectively abated 750,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions, recovered 2,000 tonnes of metal, and exported an impressive 300 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity to the public grid, facilitated through a power purchase agreement with SEWA. These accomplishments are a testament to the facility’s alignment with the emirate’s clean energy objectives.

The achievement stands as a testament to a new era in the collaborative efforts of BEEAH, Masdar, and Veolia, who are steadfastly working towards a zero-waste future in Sharjah, while simultaneously promoting a sustainable, low-carbon energy landscape across the UAE and beyond.

“Together with Masdar and our operational partner Veolia, we have created an exemplary model that can be tailored to meet the waste management and clean energy demands of urban centers not only across the UAE but in the entire region and beyond,” stated Khaled Al Huraimel, Group CEO and Vice Chairman of BEEAH.

Echoing this sentiment, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, remarked, “By converting waste into valuable energy, we are not only diminishing our reliance on traditional fossil fuels but also fostering a more circular economy that benefits both our communities and the environment.”

Philippe Bourdeaux, Executive Vice President Africa & Middle East for Veolia, expressed confidence in the project’s contribution to a broader green transformation within the UAE, affirming the company’s commitment to supporting the nation’s movement towards clean energy initiatives.

In conclusion, the Sharjah Waste-to-Energy plant is not merely a facility for energy production; it is a beacon of innovation and sustainability. Its achievement not only serves Sharjah’s environmental goals but also sets a benchmark for best practices in waste management and energy generation on a global scale. The implications of this landmark accomplishment extend beyond local and regional paradigms, inspiring future projects dedicated to fostering sustainable practices worldwide.
