‘Ship named WAX docks at port in Sri Lanka’

by Dubaiforum

The MV Maersk Edmonton, a vessel belonging to A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk) Line’s WAX Service, recently made its inaugural stop at the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA)’s East Container Terminal (ECT). This visit marks an important milestone for the Port of Colombo (POC) as it aims to attract more ships and increase maritime activity.

The decision to include Colombo in the WAX Service route was a result of discussions held between top SLPA officials, including Chairman Keith D. Bernard, and representatives from Maersk Lines and CMA CGM in Dubai. As a result of this collaboration, CMA CGM Sri Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. initiated this new service in partnership with Maersk, leading to the successful deployment of the MV Maersk Edmonton to Colombo.

The MV Maersk Edmonton, originally built by Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. of South Korea in 2011, is now operating under the Danish flag. This massive vessel boasts an impressive length of 366 meters and has a capacity to transport 13,100 TEU with a total weight of 141,716 tonnes.

Currently, CMA CGM has a fleet of 13 vessels dedicated to the WAX Service, with Maersk Line contributing an additional eight vessels to the operation. In an exciting development, Maersk recently announced significant improvements to its ME2 ocean service, further enhancing its offerings in the region.

Overall, the collaboration between Maersk, CMA CGM, and SLPA signifies a promising future for the Port of Colombo, as it continues to attract major shipping lines and promote maritime trade in the region.
