Arkansas State Fair: Celebrating Tradition and Community in Its 85th Year
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — As the Arkansas State Fair opens its doors for yet another year, it continues to be a celebration of community and tradition, captivating the hearts of attendees for an impressive 85 years. Over nearly nine decades, the fair has evolved into a vibrant cultural phenomenon, marked by an expansion in attractions, entertainment, and culinary experiences. Each year, it draws thousands from across the region, weaving the fabric of Arkansas’s social and economic life.
On a sunny Sunday, the fair buzzed with energy as Will Hornburg, Director of Sales and Promotions for the Arkansas State Fair, expressed his satisfaction with the turnout. “This is day three, and it’s a beautiful day out. We were ready to welcome our guests for what promises to be another wonderful afternoon,” he remarked. The excitement was palpable this year, as the opening day attracted over 40,000 visitors—the second-best attendance for an opening Friday in the fair’s storied history. The following day, Saturday, saw the numbers climb even higher, with more than 70,000 attendees descending upon the fairgrounds, indulging in the many offerings that the event presents.
The fair is not just an annual gathering; it is a colossal economic engine for Little Rock and the entire state of Arkansas. Hornburg noted, “We have people traveling with the carnival, we have food vendors. We’re probably putting 5,000 people in here every day that are just working. And the economic impact for the city of Little Rock and the state of Arkansas is great because they’re all staying in hotels and spending money here. The tax dollars going back to our local economy really help.” This influx of visitors amplifies the significance of the fair, creating economic opportunities for local businesses, artisans, and service providers alike.
While guests flock to enjoy a diverse array of delectable treats—ranging from the intriguing Dubai Chocolate Strawberries to traditional fair staples like corn dogs and funnel cakes—the fair is also home to exhilarating rides. Families and friends recreate cherished memories on classic rides while also embracing new attractions that deepen their connection to the fair.
The sentiment shared by Mr. Massey, a dedicated attendee, underlines the fair’s sentimental value. “I was a part of FFA, so coming to the state fair was just a big deal for our family. All my brothers did it. I enjoy coming out here with the family, taking on some games, and trying to win some stuffed animals,” he recounted. It is this blend of nostalgia and family bonding that continues to engage multiple generations within the community.
This year, fairgoers can also anticipate new attractions that add to the growing tapestry of experiences. Hornburg hinted at the excitement surrounding the debut of fresh culinary items, which consistently serve as a significant draw. “Every year we always have new food items that come in, which really anticipates bringing people in,” he stated. Moreover, the return of a fan-favorite attraction, the sea lion splash show, promises to enchant audiences of all ages. “It’s been a while since they were here, but you can come and see sea lions at the Arkansas State Fair. I don’t know that you can see that anywhere else in Arkansas,” he added.
Overall, the Arkansas State Fair is not merely an event; it represents a vital piece of Arkansas’s cultural identity. Each year, it enriches the community by providing a platform for local vendors, artists, and performers while simultaneously offering a means for families to create lasting memories. Hornburg concluded with a sense of pride, emphasizing the fair’s growth over the years. “The growth here has really been great. That’s a testament to how safe and secure it is here, and to the fact that people are having a good time. We just like to bring everybody out,” he proclaimed.
As the fair unfolds through its 85th year, it serves as a refreshing reminder of the enduring spirit of community, joy, and celebration that resonates beyond its gates, in the heart of every attendee.
