This program has now reached over 45,000 employees, encompassing staff from various partner organizations and stakeholders within the airport’s extensive ecosystem. The initiative is foundational to Dubai’s ambitious vision of becoming a Certified Autism Destination (CAD), emphasizing comfort and accessibility for all passengers at the bustling hubs of Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC).
Dubai International Airport has already carved its name in history as the first international airport globally to obtain the Certified Autism Centre (CAC) status, awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). This achievement has been underscored by recognitions from the Dubai Autism Centre (DAC), acknowledging the airport’s ongoing efforts to cater to travelers with autism, symbolizing a significant commitment to social responsibility within the aviation sector.
Majed Al Joker, Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Airports, articulated the centrality of human interaction in driving effective inclusivity. He stated, “Real inclusion begins with individuals. By boosting our investment in specialized training by 36% year-on-year, we’re embedding a deep culture of awareness and support across our airport operations.” Al Joker further emphasized that DXB and DWC serve as vital gateways to Dubai, influencing the arrival experiences of millions. The training program, accredited by IBCCES, has been meticulously integrated into the operations of key airport stakeholders, including Dubai Police, the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs, Dubai Customs, dnata, Dubai Duty Free, and various airlines such as Emirates and flydubai. This collaborative effort ensures a comprehensive and empathetic approach to supporting neurodiverse travelers at every stage of their journey—from arrival to departure.
Key components of the training include techniques for recognizing sensory sensitivities, implementing effective communication strategies, and alleviating anxiety for passengers who may experience sensory overload. Additionally, specially trained Guest Experience Ambassadors, identifiable by their distinctive Sunflower pins—a global symbol representing hidden disabilities—are stationed at strategic points throughout DXB and DWC, dedicated to providing hands-on assistance to autistic passengers and their families.
In line with its ongoing awareness campaigns, during Autism Acceptance Month, the Smart Gates at DXB, operated by the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs, are illuminated in blue to express solidarity with the autism community. Furthermore, Sunflower symbols are prominently displayed across terminal facilities, reinforcing the airport’s commitment to fostering recognition and understanding of neurodiversity.
To facilitate a smoother travel experience even prior to arrival, Dubai Airports has introduced the DXB Travel Planner, an online visual guide that assists travelers in navigating the airport’s layout and services. Visitors can request a Sunflower Lanyard, a subtle identifier for hidden disabilities, which allows for access to priority services and a tailored, sensory-sensitive routing through check-in, immigration, security, and boarding processes.
Among the variety of tailored services offered, passengers benefit from two hours of complimentary parking, dedicated taxi services, wheelchair assistance, and access to the Assisted Travel Lounge in Terminal 2—a specially designed, serene environment aimed at providing a more comfortable airport experience for those requiring additional support.
