Emirates operates demonstration flight powered with fully Sustainable Aviation Fuel

by Dubaiforum

DUBAI, 30th January, 2023 (WAM) – Emirates has operated 1st milestone demonstration flight on a Boeing 777-300ER, powered by 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The flight took off from Dubai Int’l Airport, was piloted by Captains Fali Vajifdar & Khalid Nasser Akram, lasting over an hour and was the first in Middle East & North Africa powered entirely by SAF.

Emirates’ demonstration supports broader efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, refine the playbook for future SAF demonstrations and support future certification of 100% drop-in SAF fuel. SAF is approved for use in all aircraft but only in blends of up to 50% with conventional jet fuel.

Emirates supports initiatives to minimize CO2 emissions, has made strides in fuel efficiency and supports IATA’s commitment to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Emirates’ first SAF flight was in 2017 and received 1st SAF-powered A380 delivery in 2020.
