IDST’s Chapter Café: A Residential Retreat Reshaped into an Artistic Haven

In a world where hospitality often leans toward uniformity, Hana Akram, the founder of IDST, has embarked on a transformative journey to create a unique experience in the essence of Chapter Café. Located within the architectural fabric of a villa in Abu Dhabi, this project represents not just a culinary space but a redefinition of the very concept of hospitality itself.

From the very inception of the project, Akram decided to honor the structure’s residential past, embedding this notion into the design ethos. Reflecting on this choice, she articulates, “We began with the villa and what it already gave us.” This foundational principle guided the spatial planning, as the design team opted to preserve the intimate character of smaller rooms and nuanced transitions that often characterize a home, as opposed to the expansive, open layouts conventional in many modern hospitality venues.

This unique approach fosters a welcoming atmosphere, where each area unfolds gradually, allowing visitors to discover the subtle nuances of the environment. “Rather than opening everything up, we allowed the experience to reveal itself gradually, with each space having its own energy and character,” Akram explains. This deliberate curation creates an intimate setting, inviting patrons to feel as though they have stepped into someone’s home rather than a bustling commercial café.

Adding depth to the café’s ambiance is Ribbonaira, the exquisite flower shop integrated within the venue. Akram’s vision for the plant life within the café was far from ordinary. “I didn’t want to simply cover the interior with just flowers,” she states emphatically. Instead, she employed flora as a conceptual backbone, guiding the choice of patterns, colors, materials, and overall atmosphere throughout the space. “The details were not added later as decoration,” she continues. “They grew from that same idea, from the patterned floors and layered textiles to the lighting, art, and smaller objects that reveal themselves as you move through the space.”

The creation of Chapter Café underwent an intense and meticulous curation process, underscoring Akram’s commitment to originality and authenticity. The design team approached the project akin to a composer crafting a symphony, considering the role each element would play in the overall experience. They meticulously asked critical questions: Where does the eye naturally rest? How will individuals traverse through the café? What unexpected elements can be introduced, and where should the design remain subdued? Akram reflects on this intense focus, stating, “Once we had a deeper understanding, we delved into sourcing.”

To achieve the desired atmosphere, a diverse selection of materials and finishes were meticulously gathered from a range of esteemed vendors, including Mosaic Factory, Mozaico, Optimum Gulf, Coordonné, Choufani, Glaze, and Mirodec. The team’s efforts to piece together an eclectic yet cohesive collection were extensive and time-consuming, further emphasizing the commitment to creating a personalized experience that mimics the essence of a lived-in home. Avoiding the pitfall of cookie-cutter ensembles, each room was treated as its own narrative, with a singular focal point that still harmonized with the overall composition of the café.

Curated objects from a medley of sources such as Mrs. Alice, Georges of Dubai, and others contribute to the distinctive charm and character of Chapter Café. The result is a captivating blend of aesthetics and functionality, which transforms the inherent limitations of the original structure into its most defining features. As Akram eloquently expresses, “Character comes from specificity, and having a clear narrative guiding every decision. When an interior is rooted in a strong idea, its character is what gives it longevity.”

Ultimately, Chapter Café serves as a testament to the potential of marrying artistic vision with practical hospitality. It draws patrons not just for a meal or a cup of coffee, but for an experience that feels both intimate and grand, familiar yet strikingly original. It stands as a compelling example of how a thoughtful design process can breathe new life into an existing space, reshaping it into a vibrant community hub that resonates with character and warmth.

This project exemplifies the larger trend within the Abu Dhabi region—an evolving landscape that favors innovative design and thoughtful adaptation over mere commercial utility. Akram’s strategic vision, complemented by her acute understanding of space, demonstrates the potential within the realm of modern hospitality, where each detail contributes to a woven narrative of experience.
