Dubai Enhances Urban Infrastructure with New Al Awir 1 Road Project

In a significant move aimed at bettering urban accessibility and alleviating traffic congestion, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled an ambitious initiative to construct a network of internal roads spanning 16.5 kilometers in the Al Awir 1 area. Announced on Sunday, this project is poised to significantly enhance the transportation landscape of one of Dubai’s key residential zones.

The decision to embark on this project comes in response to the increasing demand for improved traffic management in residential neighborhoods. The expansion will facilitate an additional entrance from Emirates Road, designed not only to enhance connectivity but also to integrate a series of intersections and roundabouts, further optimizing the traffic flow. This is particularly crucial as Al Awir 1 comprises a mix of villas, residential complexes, mosques, and various service institutions, necessitating efficient access for residents.

Mattar Al Tayer, the Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, elaborated on the initiative’s goals, expressing a commitment to alleviating the prevalent traffic congestion. “The objective is to accommodate the increasing traffic congestion, improve traffic flow, and enhance road safety,” Al Tayer asserted. He emphasized that a well-structured transportation framework is vital for the sustainable growth of urban areas, particularly in residential districts.

A noteworthy aspect of the project is the planned construction of 5 kilometers of internal roads linked to the Mohammed bin Rashid Housing Establishment residential project. This addition will not only provide better access within the community but also bolster the overall infrastructure in the vicinity.

Moreover, a 7.5-kilometer dual-lane road will be established, connecting Emirates Road to Al Awir 1. This new roadway will feature strategically placed intersections, roundabouts, and U-turns near Emirates Road, effectively linking various residential sectors to the main traffic arteries, thereby improving accessibility for residents.

The impact of this project promises to be transformative. According to Al Tayer, the development of the new entrance and exit is expected to double the capacity of the area’s access points, increasing the throughput from 1,500 vehicles per hour to an impressive 3,000 vehicles per hour—a significant increase of 100 percent. Additionally, the extension project involves adding a 4-kilometer lane to Emirates Road, from the entrance of Al Awir 1 to Sharjah. This newly widened lane will support a speed limit of 110 km/h, equipped to handle a capacity of 2,000 vehicles per hour.

Such infrastructural developments are essential in a rapidly growing city like Dubai, where population growth and urban sprawl continually impose challenges on the transport network.
