AD Ports Group has recently unveiled its 2025 Sustainability Report, underscoring significant advancements in its decarbonisation initiatives. The comprehensive report reveals that the group has successfully reduced its emissions intensity per unit of revenue by 6% during the year, a reflection of its commitment to sustainability amidst a robust expansion of its global operations.

The driving force behind this reduction lies in the group’s comprehensive strategy aimed at minimizing the environmental impact of its varied operations, which encompass global trade, transport, logistics, and economic development. Key measures taken include the enhancement of operational efficiencies, the deployment of solar energy, the adoption of lower-impact marine fuels, and the introduction of electric-powered vessels. Such multifaceted efforts collectively signify a robust approach to environmentally responsible business practices.

A closer examination of the figures presented in the report reveals a decline in total emissions intensity—measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) per AED 1 million in revenue—from 203.06 tCO2e in 2024 to 190.68 tCO2e in 2025. This notable decrease is heralded as a milestone in the group’s efforts to dissociate its emissions from business growth while simultaneously enhancing energy productivity. Remarkably, this positive trend occurred in a year when the group’s revenue soared by 20%, reaching AED 20.77 billion, signaling not only increased economic activity but also a meaningful commitment to sustainability.

Decarbonisation Pathway and Strategic Investments

In 2025, AD Ports Group formalized its long-term vision through the establishment of a decarbonisation pathway that spans its entire operations and value chain. The pathway outlines a total of 139 initiatives planned for implementation between 2025 and 2050. These initiatives are strategically aligned with the objectives of the Paris Agreement, particularly the commitment to limiting global warming to within 2 degrees Celsius, and further support the UAE’s ambitious Net Zero 2050 initiative.

To fund these extensive efforts, AD Ports Group is projected to invest an estimated USD 636 million over the next 25 years. This significant financial commitment is expected to facilitate a cumulative reduction of approximately 2.9 million tCO2e, representing an aggressive but necessary step toward a sustainable operational framework.

Captain Saif Al Mheiri, CEO of Abu Dhabi Maritime and Group Chief Sustainability and Risk Officer of AD Ports Group, expressed pride in the establishment of this net-zero pathway, recognizing it as a significant achievement for a global enterprise of this magnitude. He emphasized that the group’s decarbonisation journey remains a top priority, even as it expands operations and revenues. Al Mheiri further noted that integrating decarbonisation into the core business strategy not only prepares the group for sustainable growth but also reinforces its operational resilience and competitive positioning in the marketplace.

Operational Initiatives and Emission Profiles

Throughout 2025, AD Ports Group rolled out a variety of innovative initiatives to bolster emissions reduction efforts. These included the deployment of liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered pure car and truck carrier vessels within its United Global Ro-Ro venture, the implementation of ship-to-ship LNG bunkering solutions, and plans announced in conjunction with Nimex Terminals to establish LNG and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) terminal hubs at Khalifa Port.

Notably, the Maritime and Shipping Cluster, crucial to the group’s value proposition, accounted for 51% of overall revenue while simultaneously being responsible for approximately 50% of the group’s emissions in 2025. This underscores the inherent challenges of balancing growth with sustainability within high-impact sectors. Subsequent contributions to emissions profiles were noted from other segments: Ports at 24%, Logistics at 21%, and Economic Cities and Free Zones comprising 5% of emissions.

In a further commitment to sustainable practices, the group successfully diverted a total of 10,303 tonnes of waste during 2025, representing a significant 24% increase from 2024. Among this, 10,127 tonnes of non-hazardous waste were recycled, marking a 23% increase from the previous year’s figures.

Despite these commendable advancements, AD Ports Group recorded a 13% increase in total emissions—covering all Scopes 1, 2, and 3—rising to 3,957,755 tCO2e in 2025 from 3,510,131 tCO2e in 2024. This increase, while concerning, was mitigated and overshadowed by the remarkable 20% growth in revenue, demonstrating an ongoing yet complex interplay between economic growth and environmental responsibility.

In conclusion, AD Ports Group emerges as a significant player in the global logistics and transport sector, capitalizing on robust revenue growth while actively pursuing a sustainable operational framework. As the group leans into its ambitious decarbonisation goals, it sets a thoughtful precedent for others in the industry, illustrating that substantial economic success and environmental stewardship can indeed coalesce.
