As the United Arab Emirates (UAE) embarks on a pivotal journey into the realm of artificial intelligence (AI), the nation’s youth are preparing to embrace this transformative technology as an official component of their educational experience. With schools poised to reopen for the 2025-2026 academic year, the UAE’s new AI curriculum mandates the study of artificial intelligence from kindergarten through Grade 12, a noteworthy initiative stemming from the National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031.

This curriculum is more than a mere addition to the educational syllabus; it reflects the UAE’s commitment to cultivating a generation equipped with essential digital skills and an innovative mindset. The policy, announced in May, aims to empower students with the knowledge necessary to navigate an increasingly digital world, ultimately positioning them as future leaders in a range of industries.

For many students across the nation, the prospect of learning about AI elicits excitement and curiosity. Nine-year-old Mansour Alamrei epitomizes the enthusiasm of his peers as he expresses his aspirations to create applications and virtual assistants, envisioning opportunities in digital entrepreneurship. “I already have a vision of a future in digital entrepreneurship,” he shared with Aletihad.

The enthusiasm for AI extends to older students as well. Fourteen-year-old Mariam Al Breaki of Abu Dhabi succinctly described AI by saying, “It’s like a robot that helps the teacher,” highlighting the shift in educational paradigms where students associate technology with enhanced learning experiences. Such perceptions indicate a growing comfort and familiarity with digital tools among the younger generation, formed through play-based learning methodologies that introduce complex concepts in a digestible manner.

This shift in educational focus is particularly relevant in a rapidly evolving technological landscape where AI is becoming ubiquitous. For instance, fifteen-year-old Hamad Alkaabi from Al Ain has taken a more nuanced interest in the ethical and cybersecurity aspects of AI. “We need to understand AI before it understands us,” he stated, illustrating a critical awareness of the implications of technology that extends beyond mere functionality.

While many students demonstrate eagerness, others feel trepidation regarding the complexities of AI. Yara Mohammad, a thirteen-year-old from Fujairah, admitted to her anxieties about the subject. However, she was reassured by the knowledge that the curriculum will explore innovative applications of AI across various subjects, thereby making the subject more approachable and relevant.

For students poised to transition into higher education, AI classes represent invaluable resources. Seventeen-year-old Layan Abdullah from Ras Al Khaimah expressed her intent to delve into how AI influences digital media, stating, “Such information would be helpful no matter what profession I choose to take.” Her remarks reflect the recognition among students about the pervasive integration of AI in various fields and the necessity of understanding it to remain competitive in the job market.

The responsibility of teaching this curriculum rests heavily on educators. Fawzia Al Fadhili, a computer science teacher at a public school in Abu Dhabi, emphasized the dual nature of this integration. “Integrating AI into the curriculum is both an exciting opportunity and a huge responsibility,” she remarked. Al Fadhili aims to ensure that all students, irrespective of their academic backgrounds, comprehend and utilize AI effectively.

To that end, she is implementing thoughtful lesson designs focused on contextualizing AI within the students’ everyday lives. “We have created interactive lesson modules, coding exercises, and real-world case studies. In addition to honing their technical abilities, I hope this course will instill in them a critical and moral perspective of the technology that will influence the future,” Al Fadhili stated, underlining the balance between technical proficiency and ethical considerations.

As the UAE strides confidently into this new era of educational integration, the implications for students, educators, and the nation’s future workforce are profound. By committing to an AI-enhanced curriculum, the UAE is not only preparing its citizens for current technological trends but also fostering a generation of innovators and ethical thinkers, equipped to tackle the challenges of tomorrow’s world.
