Curtin University Announces Opening of Branch Campus in Sri Lanka

Curtin University Establishes New Campus in Colombo: A Significant Step for Higher Education in Sri Lanka

In a momentous development for higher education in Sri Lanka, Curtin University has inaugurated its fifth global campus in Colombo, reinforcing its commitment to delivering high-quality education in the region. This strategic expansion follows the successful establishment of similar campuses in notable locations such as Singapore, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, and Mauritius. The new campus is poised to enhance educational opportunities for Sri Lankan students through an expanded range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

Curtin University’s Vice-Chancellor, Harlene Hayne, articulated the significance of this initiative, stating, “Transforming our presence in Sri Lanka into a fully-fledged campus strengthens our commitment to the region and builds on our long-standing, successful partnership with the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT).” This longstanding partnership has yielded substantial benefits, with over 2,500 Sri Lankan students graduating from Curtin since the early 2000s. With the opening of the Colombo campus, this number is expected to rise significantly.

The new campus will enable Curtin University to diversify its offerings in engineering, computing, and business, while also introducing new programs in emerging fields such as health, artificial intelligence, and the humanities. “We have already seen more than 2,500 Sri Lankan students graduate with Curtin degrees, and now we will not only see those numbers grow but will also be able to expand our current offerings,” Hayne noted, emphasizing the university’s commitment to aligning its curriculum with industry demands.

Currently, Curtin has approximately 700 students enrolled in its Sri Lankan programs, a number reflective of the rising interest in internationally recognized qualifications. Applications for Semester 1, 2025, are now open, suggesting an optimistic outlook for prospective students eager to engage with an institution known for its academic excellence.

SLIIT, recognized as one of the few private universities from Sri Lanka to feature in global rankings, specializes in technology and management disciplines. Its collaboration with Curtin University has facilitated access to various undergraduate degree programs, many of which are accredited in Australia and recognized globally. “The partnership has successfully brought international best practices into Sri Lankan higher education while providing local students with access to high-quality international education,” remarked Lalith Gamage, Chairman of Curtin University Colombo and Vice-Chancellor of SLIIT.

The significance of this partnership and the establishment of a full-fledged campus cannot be overstated. Gamage asserted that the presence of Curtin University in Sri Lanka is not merely a matter of institutional growth; it represents a pivotal moment for the nation’s educational landscape. “Having a fully-fledged campus of Curtin University, which is consistently ranked within the top 1% of universities globally, is of national significance and augurs well for the future of higher education in this region,” he added.

In an era where transnational education (TNE) is gaining traction, Curtin University’s Colombo campus will provide students with unique opportunities to enrich their academic experience. Those enrolled at the Sri Lankan campus will have the option to transfer to any of Curtin’s other campuses in Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, the UAE, or Mauritius for a semester, all while maintaining fees aligned with their Sri Lanka coursework. This flexibility underscores the university’s innovative approach to higher education.

According to recent data shared with The PIE News, Sri Lanka has emerged as a significant hub for transnational education, with over 60,000 students annually enrolling in programs offered by private institutions. Notably, Australian TNE enrolments in Sri Lanka have witnessed exponential growth, reaching 3,145 in 2022—three times the figures recorded in 2018. This trend illustrates an increasing demand for quality international educational opportunities among Sri Lankan students, positioning Curtin University as a key player in this evolving landscape.

As Curtin University takes this significant step in Colombo, it not only enhances its footprint in the region but also contributes to the development of higher education in Sri Lanka. The establishment of this campus heralds a new era of learning and opportunity for local students, affirming the university’s dedication to fostering academic excellence and addressing the educational aspirations of future generations.
