Friends of Cancer Patients: Advancing Compassionate Care and Commitment in 2025

The Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP) has successfully concluded its second quarterly board meeting for the year 2025, encompassing a rigorous agenda that prioritized a thorough review of organizational performance over the initial five months, a careful analysis of financial expenditures, the planning of upcoming awareness campaigns, and the enhancement of support initiatives for individuals affected by cancer.

Under the guidance of Board Chair and Founding Member Sawsan Jafar, the meeting welcomed esteemed attendees including Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, Vice President and Founding Member; Sheikha Aisha Khalid Al Qasimi, Board Secretary; alongside expert board members such as Dr. Moza Al Shehhi, Khawla Al Serkal, Dr. Abdalla Al Zarooni, Ibrahim Al Khayal, and Najla Al Midfa, as well as Aisha Al Mulla, Director of FOCP.

The board’s session resulted in the approval of the annual report, an assessment of preparations for the forthcoming Pink Caravan campaign scheduled for October, and the ratification of financial disbursements amounting to Dhs3,637,159, which are set to provide essential support to 136 cancer patients spanning various nationalities and age demographics.

A Vision Rooted in Humanitarian Action

During the proceedings, Chairwoman Sawsan Jafar articulated the board’s steadfast commitment to advancing FOCP’s mission, heavily influenced by the vision of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, the Wife of the Ruler of Sharjah and the organization’s Founder and Patron. “Our strategic direction remains firmly rooted in social responsibility and generosity, ensuring a lasting and sustainable model of humanitarian action. The board is committed to a holistic management approach that balances strategic planning with continuous evaluation, enhancing FOCP’s long-term impact,” Jafar emphasized, underlining the organization’s dedication to fostering a culture of compassion and support.

Holistic Support for Cancer Patients

A vital aspect of the board’s discussion revolved around the growing emphasis on strengthening partnerships to enhance the scope of medical, psychological, and social support offered to cancer patients. Dr. Abdalla Al Zarooni reaffirmed this commitment, stating, “We are developing impactful initiatives tailored to meet the diverse needs of cancer patients and ensure a safe, empowering environment that sustains hope and emotional resilience throughout their treatment journey.” This focus on holistic support is not only pivotal for the patients’ physical health but also for sustaining their emotional well-being through a comprehensive support network.

Strategic Advancements and International Engagement

In a significant move to further its mission, FOCP announced the appointment of Majed Mohamed to the Board of Directors of the Eastern Mediterranean Noncommunicable Disease Alliance (NCDA). “This role allows me to contribute to regional health strategies while representing an organization that has long been at the forefront of cancer and NCD advocacy. It is an honour to amplify FOCP’s mission on a broader regional platform,” Mohamed remarked, highlighting the organization’s intent to be a key player in shaping health policies and practices across the region.

In line with its dedication to fostering valuable partnerships, FOCP entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Emirates Health Services (EHS) to enhance efforts around early detection, community awareness, and comprehensive support for cancer patients, aligning both organizations with national healthcare objectives. The organization’s participation in the 25th IUHPE World Conference on Health Promotion marked a significant engagement on an international stage, where FOCP contributed to discussions centered on equity and innovation in cancer care while hosting activities designed to empower patients and their families.

Ongoing Advocacy and Community Engagement

Throughout 2025, FOCP maintained an active role in delivering eight patient support events in partnership with twelve local entities, successfully reaching 279 cancer patients and survivors. Furthermore, the organization participated in five advocacy platforms, gathering 225 attendees and producing seven strategic reports that illustrate the impact of FOCP’s initiatives on health policy and community well-being.

An engaging highlight was FOCP’s presence at the UAE Oncology Society’s cancer survivor graduation ceremony at the Museum of the Future, a momentous occasion that celebrated the inspiring journeys of those who have triumphed over cancer.

Earlier this year, during the Holy Month of Ramadan, FOCP showcased its commitment to community compassion through a series of events aimed at uplifting cancer patients and their families. Partnering with philanthropic supporters, government entities, and compassionate businesses, FOCP worked tirelessly to manifest the essence of Ramadan through kindness and solidarity. A poignant Iftar gathering co-hosted with the TIME Grand Plaza Hotel in Dubai served as an emotional highlight, bringing together children battling cancer, their families, and survivors to honor the incredible strength and resilience of those affected.

As FOCP charts its course for the remainder of 2025 and beyond, the organization remains unwavering in its pursuit of elevating the quality of life for cancer patients, fostering hope, cultural sensitivity, and a profoundly supportive community.
