Dubai Municipality Unveils Ambitious Green Initiative with AED 245 Million Planting and Beautification Projects
In an inspiring move to enhance the aesthetic appeal and environmental sustainability of Dubai, the Municipality has successfully completed seven expansive projects aimed at planting and beautifying key intersections along two of the city’s most prominent roads: Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. With a total investment of AED 245 million, these initiatives span over 1.4 million square meters and are a testament to the Emirate’s ongoing commitment to increasing green spaces and fostering a healthier urban environment.
A Vision for Green Dubai
This ambitious initiative aligns closely with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who has repeatedly emphasized the importance of expanding green infrastructure throughout the city. H.E. Dawoud Al Hajri, the Director General of Dubai Municipality, has underscored that these new projects form an integral part of the “Green Dubai Project.” This innovative initiative is principally aimed at developing the city’s green spaces while promoting the sustainability of natural resources—ultimately enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
Expanding Green Coverage
The scope of the projects includes the planting of approximately 2.5 million seedlings of flowers and ornamental plants, along with 6,500 trees. The Municipality has also implemented state-of-the-art, water-efficient irrigation systems designed to optimize water usage while ensuring lush greenery thrives in the urban landscape. This sustainable approach highlights Dubai’s commitment to preserving natural resources amidst rapid urbanization.
In his statements, Al Hajri emphasized the Municipality’s dedication to utilizing integrated, innovative practices that enrich the city’s natural beauty. He remarked, “At Dubai Municipality, we are committed to expanding Dubai’s greenery through integrated projects and innovative practices that enhance the city’s appeal and distinctive aesthetic, reinforcing its reputation as a global leader in sustainability and excellence—where urban development merges seamlessly with environmental diversity.”
Notable Projects on Sheikh Zayed Road
Focusing on the iconic Sheikh Zayed Road, which serves as the backbone of Dubai’s transportation network, the Municipality has completed multiple beautification projects. These initiatives cover a substantial area of 843,000 square meters and feature new plantings at major intersections, including those with Al Yelayes Street and Al Jameel Street. Integral to this development was the application of nearly 1.5 million seedlings along the stretch of road, complemented by the introduction of 3,500 new trees. Additionally, to mitigate soil erosion and enhance the area’s aesthetics, an impressive 290,000 square meters of soil mulching has been conducted.
Enhancements Along Al Khail Road
Meanwhile, the Al Khail Road intersections have witnessed their own significant beautification projects. These three initiatives, covering over 625,000 square meters, include enhancements at the junctions of Al Khail Street with Al Meydan Street, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Street, and Umm Suqeim Street. Here, the Municipality has introduced 1 million seedlings and 3,000 trees, along with 143,654 square meters of soil mulch, thereby enriching the landscape while promoting environmental health.
Future Endeavors and Growth
As part of its broader sustainability objectives, Dubai Municipality has planted over 185,000 trees in 2023 alone, averaging approximately 500 trees per day throughout the year. With the expansion of green spaces in Dubai totaling an impressive 234 hectares in 2023—up from 170 hectares the previous year—the Municipality’s efforts are unmistakably yielding fruitful results.
In summary, this multi-faceted initiative by Dubai Municipality not only augments the city’s visual appeal but solidifies its identity as a leading global city committed to sustainability and innovation. Moving forward, officials remain resolute in their mission to expand the city’s greenery while ensuring a comfortable and healthy environment for all who call Dubai home.
