Dubai Taxi Company and DEWA Forge Partnership to Propel Electric Vehicle Adoption
In a significant advance for sustainable transportation in the United Arab Emirates, the Dubai Taxi Company (DTC) has entered into a strategic agreement with the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) to implement 208 ultra-fast electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. This multifaceted initiative represents a key milestone in Dubai’s overarching green mobility objectives and is set to have a transformative impact on the city’s transportation ecosystem by enhancing the infrastructure necessary for electric vehicles.
The terms of the agreement were officially established during the WETEX 2025 exhibition, a prominent platform dedicated to showcasing innovations in water, energy, and environmental technologies. The signing ceremony was attended by senior officials, including Waleed bin Salman, the Executive Vice President of Business Development and Excellence at DEWA, and Mansoor Rahma Alfalasi, the CEO of DTC. The presence of HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, underscored the significance of this partnership, which aims to further enable the electric mobility transition in Dubai.
Al Tayer emphasized that this agreement aligns seamlessly with DEWA’s EV Green Charger initiative, which has already established over 1,500 charging stations across the city. This extensive network aims to support the ambitious goals set forth in the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030, the Dubai Social Agenda 33, and the UAE’s Net-Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy for 2050. By facilitating the seamless adoption of electric vehicles, the initiative seeks to minimize carbon emissions, optimize operational efficiency, and bolster Dubai’s position as a global leader in sustainable urban development.
“The project is not merely a technological upgrade; it is a vital investment in our collective future,” Al Tayer remarked, highlighting the broader implications of the initiative.
In alignment with Dubai’s progressive vision for sustainable transportation, DTC has set an ambitious target: to fully electrify its entire fleet by 2040. Abdul Mushen Ibrahim Kalbat, the chairman of DTC, reinforced this commitment, articulating the company’s vision for a transportation system that is interconnected, green, and sustainable. “This partnership is a strategic investment in the future of mobility,” Kalbat stated, affirming the collaborative efforts that will guide the fleet’s electrification.
As part of the initial phase of implementation, two key charging hubs will be established in strategic locations: DTC Depot, conveniently situated near Dubai International Airport, and the DTC headquarters in Muhaisnah 4. These hubs will utilize cutting-edge technology, featuring next-generation charging stations capable of delivering up to 360 kW of power. This robust network is projected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 37,939 metric tonnes each year. When combined with DTC’s prevailing infrastructure, the total emissions reduction could reach an impressive 49,654 metric tonnes annually—an important contribution to the UAE’s ambition of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Since its inception in 2014, DEWA’s EV Green Charger initiative has been instrumental in expanding Dubai’s charging infrastructure, thus promoting electric vehicle usage in the emirate. The ongoing efforts not only reflect a growing acceptance of electric vehicles but also signify a cultural shift towards adopting greener, more sustainable practices in everyday transportation.
Dubai’s focus on sustainability and innovation is critical not only for enhancing the quality of life for its residents but also for reinforcing its position as a model for other cities globally. By investing in infrastructure that supports clean energy vehicles, Dubai is sending a strong message to the international community about the importance of sustainable urban development and the role of technology in driving this change.
In conclusion, the collaboration between DEWA and DTC is a pivotal move toward achieving a sustainable and technologically advanced transportation network in Dubai. As global efforts to combat climate change accelerate, initiatives like these serve as fundamental steps in promoting environmentally conscious practices and heralding a new era of eco-friendly mobility in one of the Middle East’s most vibrant urban centers.
