EDGE Achieves Major Development Milestones for MIRSAD-X Electro-Optic System

Abu Dhabi, August 20, 2025—In a significant advancement for the burgeoning defense technology sector, EDGE, one of the world’s preeminent organizations specializing in advanced technologies and defense solutions, has successfully completed critical developmental milestones for its cutting-edge MIRSAD-X electro-optic system. The announcement follows a rigorous field test conducted at EDGE’s multi-domain training, testing, and evaluation facility located on XRANGE—which has emerged as a cornerstone for defense innovation in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The recent testing phase of the MIRSAD-X system was meticulously designed to scrutinize its capabilities across a spectrum of functionalities. The system’s adeptness at detection, recognition, and identification of various targets was confirmed under diverse environmental conditions. Additionally, the test validated the system’s sensor command-and-control functions, tracking precision, target localization, and the intuitive nature of its human-machine interface. Notably, the MIRSAD-X system demonstrated outstanding reliability, effectively adapting to the UAE’s challenging hot and humid summer climate—a critical factor for operational readiness in the region.

Felix Matis, Director of the Electro-Optics Centre of Excellence within EDGE’s Technology & Innovation (T&I) Cluster, expressed satisfaction with the test results. “The MIRSAD-X performed exceptionally well, consistently delivering a clear and stabilized image amid harsh environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, strong wind gusts, and dust turbulence. A primary objective of our endeavor was to assess the manual and automatic tracking capabilities of the MIRSAD-X across various scenarios,” Matis stated. He underscored the system’s robust performance and expressed the organization’s intent to further refine its functionalities for a multitude of applications.

A vital component of the ongoing development, as articulated by Slim Sayadi, Senior Technical Manager at the Electro-Optics Centre of Excellence, includes plans for testing the MIRSAD-X’s laser designator—a sophisticated addition aimed at enhancing its operational scope. “As we progress, we aim to evaluate the system’s performance while on the move, particularly once it is integrated onto a land platform,” Sayadi noted, emphasizing the innovative trajectory of the MIRSAD-X program.

The MIRSAD-X is defined as a gyro-stabilized multi-spectral electro-optic imaging system, entrenched in the ethos of cutting-edge technology. This sophisticated system is engineered for real-time detection, tracking, localization, and targeting of objects of interest—capabilities that render it particularly valuable in contexts such as the deployment of laser-guided munitions and the surveillance of maritime and border areas. Furthermore, the system is designed to seamlessly integrate with various platforms, ranging from ground vehicles to naval vessels, thereby enhancing operational flexibility and responsiveness.

Emphasizing the robust infrastructure that supports such progressive technological advancements, EDGE’s T&I Cluster is concurrently engaged in the development of a naval variant of the MIRSAD-X. This exciting variant is slated for integration and testing aboard EDGE’s naval assets—further solidifying EDGE’s commitment to fostering technological innovation that is tailored to meet the unique demands of both land and maritime operations.

This emphasis on technology in defense illuminates a broader trend within the Arabian Gulf region, where nations are increasingly focusing on enhancing their capabilities through homegrown innovations. EDGE’s strides in the MIRSAD-X program reflect a concerted effort to ensure that regional defense systems can adapt to evolving threats and maintain operational superiority.

As EDGE continues to refine and expand the capabilities of the MIRSAD-X system, the implications for national security and defense posture within the UAE and the broader GCC region are profound. The advancements achieved during this testing phase mark not only a milestone for EDGE but also signify the UAE’s escalating role as a pivotal player in the global defense technology arena.
