Dubai Marks a New Era in Renewable Energy with Hatta Hydroelectric Plant Trial Operations
Dubai, UAE: The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has recently embarked on trial operations of the groundbreaking pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant located in Hatta. This ambitious project signifies a remarkable advancement in the emirate’s commitment to sustainable energy, as it is already contributing electricity to Dubai’s power grid.
During the initial testing phase, the Hatta facility has generated an impressive total of over 17,921 megawatt-hours (MWh) of clean energy, showcasing the significant role this plant is destined to play in the integration of renewable energy solutions. The Hatta hydroelectric plant is designed with a generation capacity of 250 megawatts (MW) and boasts a remarkable storage capability of 1,500 megawatt-hours, with an anticipated operational lifespan of up to 80 years. While the peak electricity demand in the Hatta region hovers around 39 MW, the surplus energy produced is seamlessly channeled to Dubai, reinforcing the emirate’s renewable energy supply in line with its longstanding vision for an eco-friendly future.
Strategic Vision and Investment
A visit to the project site by His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, along with key officials—including Nasser Lootah, Executive Vice President of Generation, and Khalifa Al Bedwawi, Project Manager—underscored the leadership’s dedication to this initiative. Al Tayer articulated the importance of the project in accordance with the broader framework set forth by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. This aligns with the nation’s goals for comprehensive and sustainable development.
The Hatta hydroelectric plant is the result of a staggeringly significant investment of AED 1.42 billion (approximately USD 386.67 million). This financial commitment plays a pivotal role in supporting the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, aiming for 100 percent clean energy use by the year 2050. Moreover, it is integral to the Dubai Net-Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, reinforcing the emirate’s objective to position itself as a leader in renewable energy.
This state-of-the-art facility is engineered to respond quickly to energy demands, capable of supplying DEWA’s grid within a mere 90 seconds by converting the potential energy of stored water into electricity.
The plant is uniquely constructed 60 meters beneath the Earth’s surface and features critical infrastructure, including two primary water valves each weighing approximately 110 tons, and a sophisticated command and control center. The adjacent upper dam, with a water surface area of 210,000 square meters and a storage capacity of around 5.3 million cubic meters, plays a crucial role in the operation of the facility.
Innovative Mechanics and Environmental Benefits
The hydroelectric process is ingeniously designed to utilize the potential energy of water kept in the upper dam, which flows through a subterranean tunnel measuring 1.2 kilometers to induce turbine action and generate electricity at an efficiency rate of 78.9 percent. Moreover, clean energy harvested from the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is employed to pump water back to the upper dam, which ensures a sustainable cycle of power generation and consumption.
Al Tayer emphasized that the Hatta project complements DEWA’s existing portfolio of renewable technologies, which include solar photovoltaic systems, concentrated solar power, and advanced battery storage solutions. This initiative not only enhances Dubai’s resilience in energy supply but also stands as a pioneering step in the establishment of sustainable infrastructure within the region.
