Collaborative Fusion: Human Made and Shake Shack Redefine Culinary Aesthetics

In an innovative convergence of fashion and food, the Japanese streetwear brand Human Made, founded by the multifaceted designer Nigo, has partnered with the iconic fast-casual dining chain Shake Shack. This collaboration, which speaks to the sensory and cultural intersections of haute cuisine and cutting-edge fashion, promises a unique experience for both fashion enthusiasts and culinary aficionados alike.

Nigo, whose creative journey began with the establishment of A Bathing Ape (Bape) in the 1990s, has since expanded his portfolio by founding Human Made in 2010 and serving as artistic director for the esteemed brand Kenzo. Beyond the realm of fashion, he is also known as a member of the influential hip-hop group Teriyaki Boyz, which further amplifies his impact in contemporary culture. On the other hand, Shake Shack, which emerged from a humble hot dog cart in Madison Square Park, has metamorphosed into a culinary ambassador for New York style since its inception in 2004, boasting over 610 locations worldwide.

On July 22, in a vibrant setting at the Central Square branch in Bonifacio Global City (BGC), the much-anticipated collaboration debuted its offerings. Launched first in Japan on July 19, the collaboration quickly spread across the Asian region, with additional rollouts in major cities like Seoul and Hong Kong, while mainland China will witness the full menu launch on August 6. Alongside delectable menu items, Human Made has also released a selection of apparel and accessories, including caps, shirts, pouches, and distinctively designed enamel key rings and pins, all drawing on the aesthetic sensibility that characterizes Nigo’s work.

The culinary highlights of this partnership are epitomized by the Teriyaki Shack Cheeseburger, a delightful concoction that showcases the melding of Japanese and American flavors. This innovative burger features a lavish teriyaki glaze, complemented by toasted black and white sesame seeds, pickled daikon, crispy onions, scallions, and a sweet soy mayo served on a toasted potato bun. This rich offering is accompanied by the Human Made Curry Cheese Fries, which consist of crinkle-cut fries topped with a decadent curry cheese sauce, applewood-smoked bacon, and scallions. While indulgently flavorful, it is worth noting that the strong onion-forward flavors might complicate post-burger social interactions.

In addition to the featured items, the collaboration also introduces Shake Shack’s new lineup of smaller shake options, including the exquisite Black and White shake, which blends creamy vanilla and rich chocolate fudge. Furthermore, breakfast enthusiasts will be thrilled by the addition of a selection of breakfast items, including the Egg N’ Cheese, Arugula Egg N’ Cheese, and Grilled Cheese, among others.

Kate Villasenor, marketing director at Good Eats Specialists, Inc., the exclusive franchise holder for Shake Shack in the Philippines, elaborates on the collaboration’s ethos: “Nigo is a profound admirer of Japanese cuisine intertwined with American culture. Our focus is centered on delivering quality and innovation while respecting and maintaining our culinary heritage.”

This partnership extends beyond mere product offerings; it serves to bridge cultural divides and foster community connections. Villasenor notes, “Our endeavor to collaborate with creative minds outside the culinary world underscores our commitment to staying relevant, engaging with not only the culinary community but also with those dedicated to sustainability, friendship, and family-oriented lifestyles.”

The collaboration’s unique offerings will be presented in exclusive packaging emblazoned with a distinctive heart-burger emblem, symbolizing the fusion of flavors and cultures. For those keen to acquire the limited-edition key ring and pin, these items will only be available at select Shake Shack locations, excluding SM North EDSA, Gateway Mall 2, and NAIA Terminal 3, with availability in branches like Alabang Town Center and SM Mall of Asia.

As this exciting partnership unfolds, it stands as a testament to the ever-evolving intersections of food, fashion, and cultural expression in the modern marketplace, drawing gastronomes and fashion lovers alike into a shared narrative of creativity and community.
