In an era where leadership is often measured by the ability to listen and respond to the needs of citizens, His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, stands as a beacon of compassionate governance. With a clear commitment to addressing public concerns, he recently articulated the importance of direct communication with his constituents during the “Direct Line” programme, a platform that has become integral to the governance framework of the emirate.
“At the core of effective leadership lies the ability to listen to the people,” Sheikh Sultan emphasized, underscoring his dedication to resolving pressing issues raised by Emiratis. Through this programme, he actively engages with the community, channeling their grievances and suggestions to relevant government departments to forge practical solutions.
A poignant illustration of this commitment came to light when Sheikh Sultan intervened to ensure the continued medical treatment of the father of ‘Umm Mohammed,’ a devoted viewer of the Direct Line programme. The health authority was instructed to facilitate the patient’s care at Burjeel Hospital in Abu Dhabi, with Sheikh Sultan’s office agreeing to bear the costs irrespective of insurance limitations. Dr. Abdul Aziz Al Muhairi, Chairman of the Sharjah Health Authority, detailed how Sheikh Sultan responded to a heartfelt plea from ‘Umm Mohammed’ regarding her father’s treatment, which had been complicated by the cessation of coverage by the insurance provider.
In a reaffirmation of his dedication, Sheikh Sultan mandated that, should the family choose, arrangements would be made for resources to be allocated for either continued care at Burjeel Hospital or a transfer to the University Hospital in Sharjah. This decision not only reflects his genuine concern for individual welfare but also highlights an inherent belief in the state’s responsibility to provide for its citizens’ health and well-being.
In addition to his interventions in health care, Sheikh Sultan has taken significant steps to bolster the residential and economic landscape of Sharjah. Recently, he approved the allocation of land in the Al Haray area of Khorfakkan for various uses, including 180 residential plots, 450 industrial plots, and 60 commercial plots. This strategic decision aims to support local development and meet the needs of the growing populace, with leveling work projected to be completed in two months, ensuring timely delivery to eligible beneficiaries. Ayman Rashid Al Naqbi, Director of the Department of Planning and Survey-Khorfakkan Branch, also announced plans for a park within the area, thereby enhancing community living standards.
Moreover, Sheikh Sultan unveiled an ambitious infrastructure project that promises to transform the travel experience through the mountainous landscapes of Khorfakkan. The proposed road, designed to ascend from the Ghazir Tunnel to the highest mountain peak at an impressive elevation of 1,100 meters, is envisioned as not merely a transport route but as an experience in itself—surrounded by lush greenery and scenic waterways. “This road will be a wonder like no other, and driving on it will be a true pleasure,” Sheikh Sultan declared during the Direct Line programme, inviting a sense of anticipation for both residents and tourists alike.
The emphasis on housing support has also been spotlighted under Sheikh Sultan’s leadership, with a newly approved allocation of Dhs335 million aimed at urgent housing needs. A total of 431 families will benefit from this initiative, which seeks to provide adequate living arrangements to those residing in rented accommodations, overcrowded homes, or structurally unsound houses. Khalid bin Butti Al Muhairi, Chairman of the Sharjah Department of Housing, announced that beneficiaries will receive ready-built government housing, a welcome relief for many in need of stable living conditions.
The initiatives and programs championed by Sheikh Sultan reflect a holistic approach to governance, intertwining health, infrastructure, and housing into a cohesive strategy aimed at enhancing the quality of life for citizens of Sharjah. Each decision not only addresses immediate concerns but builds a foundation for sustainable development in the emirate, fostering a community that is not only resilient but also deeply interconnected.
As Sheikh Sultan continues to pave the way for transformative governance, his efforts serve as a blueprint for other leaders in the region and beyond, illustrating the profound impact of compassionate leadership rooted in the principles of listening and action.
