Dubai’s Road Transformation: Al Safa Street Improvement Project
In a significant stride towards enhancing urban infrastructure, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has unveiled plans for the Al Safa Street Improvement Project, a crucial initiative aimed at addressing the growing demands of traffic and improving connectivity within the bustling metropolis. Announced on Saturday, the ambitious project spans 1,500 metres, extending from the junction of Al Safa Street with Sheikh Zayed Road to the junction with Al Wasl Street.
At the heart of this transformative endeavor lies the construction of two bridges and two tunnels, collectively measuring 3,120 metres. These infrastructural enhancements are designed not only to facilitate the smooth movement of vehicles but also to elevate the overall urban experience by incorporating innovative design elements that prioritize both functionality and aesthetics.
Upon completion, the Al Safa Street Improvement Project is projected to dramatically reduce travel time on Al Safa Street from 12 minutes to a mere 3 minutes. Additionally, the street’s vehicle capacity is set to double from 6,000 to an impressive 12,000 vehicles per hour, enabling better traffic management in an area that serves as a nexus for both residents and visitors.
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, articulated the importance of this undertaking as part of a wider master plan focused on enhancing the road network and overall transportation infrastructure in Dubai. This initiative coincides with similar developments on other key thoroughfares, including Umm Suqeim and Al Wasl Streets.
Al Tayer emphasized the significance of Al Safa Street, situated in a vital district that plays host to numerous tourism, cultural, and sporting events. The area is home to landmark attractions such as City Walk, the Coca-Cola Arena, esteemed educational institutions, luxurious hotels, and premier dining establishments. Moreover, the project is expected to bolster connectivity with Downtown Dubai and the adjacent Financial Centre Street, an area inhabited by over one million residents.
“Creativity and community engagement are at the forefront of our vision for this project,” Al Tayer stated. The design will feature dedicated pedestrian walkways and cycling tracks, vibrant urban spaces that encourage interactions among citizens, and a public realm enhanced by landscaped areas. The specifics of the project unveil detailed plans for two bridges: The first bridge, measuring 1,005 metres and comprising four lanes, will cater to traffic moving from Al Wasl Street towards Sheikh Zayed Road and Financial Centre Street. With an estimated capacity of 6,400 vehicles per hour, it will serve as a critical conduit for reducing congestion. The second bridge, extending 360 metres with two lanes, aims to facilitate traffic from Al Satwa Road towards the same key routes.
In addition to the bridges, the project will incorporate two tunnels to further alleviate traffic pressure. The first tunnel will span 1,005 metres, consisting of two lanes directed towards Al Wasl Street from Sheikh Zayed Road and Financial Centre Street, with a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour. The second, located at the intersection of Al Wasl Street and Al Safa Street, will boast two lanes in each direction, covering 750 metres and accommodating approximately 6,400 vehicles per hour.
Moreover, the initiative will include widening Al Safa Street from three signalised lanes in each direction to four, enhancing the infrastructure for both free-flowing traffic and vehicles managed by traffic signals. Additional features will encompass improvements to lighting systems, directional signage, and a rainwater drainage network, while also addressing the protection and relocation of existing utility services.
