Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority Unveils Major Upgrade Project for Umm Suqeim Street
In a strategic move to enhance road infrastructure and bolster traffic capacity, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced an ambitious urban development project aimed at upgrading Umm Suqeim Street. This initiative, following the directives of the emirate’s leadership, extends from the intersection with Jumeirah Street to Al Khail Road, marking a significant advancement in Dubai’s efforts to promote efficient urban development.
The impetus behind this project lies in the pressing demands of urban expansion and the sustained growth of Dubai’s population. As the emirate transforms, the RTA seeks to not only improve traffic flow but also elevate the quality of life for both residents and visitors alike. This endeavor is designed to create a seamless transportation experience, ultimately connecting key areas across the emirate. The existing upgrade efforts for Umm Suqeim Street from its intersection with Al Khail Road toward Emirates Road are part of a larger vision to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow from Jumeirah to Al Qudra Road, covering a sprawling distance of 20 kilometers.
Beyond the conventional scope of road widening, the project integrates innovative and aesthetic enhancements into the urban landscape. It will introduce upgraded pedestrian pathways and dedicated cycling tracks, fostering a more vibrant, community-centric environment. This development is poised to create “complete streets” or boulevards, which will not only facilitate transportation but also cultivate spaces for social interaction, thereby enriching the urban fabric of Dubai.
One of the key components of the project is the establishment of a direct link between the Mall of the Emirates Metro Station and nearby residential areas. This undertaking aims to enhance accessibility, ensuring smooth and integrated transport for those moving between the metro and their homes. Such improvements underscore the commitment to providing a holistic transport network that caters to a diverse population.
As highlighted by His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, the upgrade of Umm Suqeim Street is part of a master plan focused on improving the Umm Suqeim–Al Qudra corridor. Designed to serve critical residential and development zones, the project is expected to cater to over two million residents and significantly enhance connectivity across four major transport corridors in Dubai: Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road.
Specifically, the upgrade aims to increase the traffic capacity of Umm Suqeim Street to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. Such enhancements are set to drastically reduce travel time between Jumeirah Street and Al Khail Road, from 20 minutes down to just six, a remarkable improvement that reflects the RTA’s commitment to facilitating efficient urban mobility.
The project also involves extensive upgrades to six key intersections along Umm Suqeim Street. Significant intersections, including those with Jumeirah Street, Al Wasl Street, Sheikh Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street, Al Asayel Street, and Al Khail Road, will undergo transformative modifications. The construction of four bridges and three tunnels, totaling a combined length of 4,100 meters, is part of this comprehensive enhancement initiative.
Among the anticipated features is a two-lane tunnel at the Jumeirah Street intersection, complemented by a signalised surface-level junction, to efficiently manage traffic volumes. Additionally, a separate tunnel will facilitate traffic flow from Sheikh Zayed Road towards Jumeirah Street, ensuring that surface-level traffic remains uninterrupted.
Moreover, at the Sheikh Zayed Road intersection, the introduction of two bridges aims to eliminate traffic overlap, further refining movement efficiency. Detailed plans for the intersection with First Al Khail Street include developing a tunnel to accommodate traffic from Al Barsha towards Sheikh Zayed Road, paired with extensive surface-level improvements. This is in tandem with widening the stretch between First Al Khail Street and Al Asayel Street, increasing its capacity to four lanes in each direction.
Currently, RTA is progressing on a 4.6-kilometer segment of Umm Suqeim Street, with significant developments already exceeding 70% completion. The ambitious scope includes a major redevelopment of the intersection at Al Barsha South, adjacent to Kings’ School, which features an 800-meter tunnel with a four-lane configuration in each direction.
In addition, the RTA has embarked on a parallel project aimed at upgrading critical intersections along Al Qudra Road. This comprehensive upgrade extends from the junction with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and includes the construction of new bridges and the enhancement of existing roadway infrastructure.
As Dubai continues to position itself at the forefront of global cities, such infrastructural projects are pivotal to ensuring efficient transport systems that can accommodate its rapidly growing population.
