Linxon Secures Vital Contract for New Substation Project in Abu Dhabi
In a significant move for the energy sector in the United Arab Emirates, Linxon has been awarded a prestigious contract by TAQA Transmission for the construction of a 400/220 kV substation located in ICAD-4, part of the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD). This undertaking is designed as a full turnkey Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) project, and it forms a critical part of TAQA Transmission’s strategy to phase out the Sas Al Nakheel generation plant while simultaneously addressing the burgeoning power demands associated with the region’s megaprojects.
As Abu Dhabi continues to expand, the demand for efficient and reliable electricity supply escalates proportionately. The project is poised to play an essential role in maintaining the stability and reliability of the UAE’s electrical grid, which is imperative for supporting both existing and future infrastructure developments.
The scope of the construction work is comprehensive and multifaceted, encompassing the supply and installation of high-voltage infrastructure. Among the critical components are 400 kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS), 220 kV GIS, and 33 kV GIS systems. Additionally, the project includes the implementation of 500 MVA power transformers and an array of associated control and protection systems. Linxon will also oversee all aspects of the substation control and monitoring systems (SCMS), telecom and Load Distribution Center (LDC) integration, as well as comprehensive civil construction tasks, firefighting systems, and MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) works.
The new ICAD-4 substation is expected to be commissioned by 2028, marking a significant milestone in Linxon’s ongoing commitment to infrastructure development throughout the region. Hassan Merhi, the Managing Director for Linxon Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa, emphasized the importance of this project in the company’s broader objective of fostering urban growth and community expansion through enhanced infrastructure services. He remarked, “This project is a pivotal step towards ensuring the continuous growth of cities and the wellbeing of communities by guaranteeing a robust infrastructure.”
TAQA Transmission’s initiative to decommission the Sas Al Nakheel plant is not merely a response to the evolving needs of Abu Dhabi but also aligns with the UAE’s strategic goals of diversifying its energy sources and reducing its carbon footprint. By investing in modern, high-capacity substations like the one at ICAD-4, the UAE is taking decisive actions toward sustainable development while addressing the inevitable increases in energy consumption driven by both population growth and industrial progress.
The impact of this project extends beyond its immediate significance. As a critical part of Abu Dhabi’s electricity supply network, the new substation will ensure that energy demands are met reliably and economically. This, in turn, will facilitate the successful execution of various ongoing and upcoming megaprojects, which are vital for the emirate’s transformation into a global business center.
Furthermore, the project’s parameters reflect a broader trend within the Gulf region, characterized by a shift toward sophistication in energy infrastructure. Many countries within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) are investing heavily in modernizing their energy systems to accommodate the digitalization of services and the implementation of smart grid technologies, thereby enhancing overall operational efficiency.
Given the stakes involved, Linxon’s selection for this key project underscores the company’s established reputation and expertise in delivering high-quality utilities infrastructure across diverse markets. As countries like the UAE pursue their ambitions for economic diversification and sustainable growth, the role of companies like Linxon will remain critical in achieving these goals.
The construction of the ICAD-4 substation is more than just another project; it represents a vision for the future—one where infrastructure is not an afterthought but a foundational element enabling growth and transformation in a rapidly evolving urban landscape.
