Mitsubishi Power to Provide M501 JAC for Combined Steam and Electricity Generation Project

In a significant stride toward cleaner energy solutions, the JAC gas turbine boasts a remarkable efficiency rate of over 64%. This cutting-edge technology is designed to enhance operational flexibility, reduce start-up times, and adeptly manage fluctuating energy demands.

Samsung C&T Corporation, a major player in the construction and engineering sector, has made strides in the energy arena by placing an order for Mitsubishi Power’s advanced M501 JAC combined-cycle hydrogen-ready gas turbine. This turbine will be the cornerstone of a major cogeneration plant intended to bolster industrial steam and electricity for a petrochemical complex located in Jubail, Saudi Arabia. The project is part of a consortium that includes Abu Dhabi National Energy Co. (commonly referred to as TAQA) and the Japanese energy company JERA.

Dr. Frank Possmeier, the Chief Business Development Officer of TAQA’s Generation Business, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “TAQA and its partners are excited to team with Mitsubishi Power to leverage the efficiencies and advantages offered by its J-class gas turbine technology as we embark on this endeavor.” Possmeier continued to highlight their commitment to sustainability and operational excellence, a theme that resonates in today’s energy landscape.

The cogeneration power plant, which is set to deliver a substantial 475 MW of energy, is co-owned by TAQA (51%) and JERA (49%). This initiative plays a pivotal role in supporting the strategic expansion of the Saudi Aramco Total Refining and Petrochemical Co. (SATORP), a collaboration between Saudi Aramco and TotalEnergies. The SATORP complex is set to include a significant mixed-load steam cracker, which will enhance its capacity for producing vital petrochemical products.

Izumi Kai, Managing Executive Officer and Head of the Platform Business Division at JERA, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with Mitsubishi Power in the development of the SATORP expansion. “This new cogeneration facility, built on sophisticated J-class gas turbine technology, is crafted to maximize energy efficiency while minimizing environmental impacts,” he noted. Kai’s statement underscores the broader industry shift towards sustainability—an imperative as environmental concerns take center stage.

The JAC gas turbines are remarkable not only for their efficiency but also for their versatility. Capable of blending hydrogen with natural gas, they offer the SATORP cogeneration plant a significant degree of operational flexibility. This flexibility is vital in today’s energy environment, where demand can fluctuate dramatically. With faster start-up capabilities and effective load-following mechanisms, the turbine system is equipped to stabilize electricity supply and demand, all while fostering a low-carbon power supply.

This project comes at a crucial time when Saudi Arabia is keen on diversifying its economy and reducing its carbon footprint. The cogeneration plant aims to contribute meaningfully to these goals, supporting industrial growth while aligning with Saudi Arabia’s broader decarbonization objectives. With the government’s Vision 2030 initiative in place, which emphasizes a shift towards sustainable energy sources and technologies, this investment in hydrogen-ready technology could play a pivotal role in shaping the kingdom’s energy future.

In addition to the supply of its cutting-edge turbines, Mitsubishi Power has also cemented a long-term service agreement with the consortium to ensure reliable operations and sustainability. With a service center strategically located near the plant, Mitsubishi Power is committed to delivering rapid response support, which is crucial for maintaining operational efficiency.

In a parallel development, Mitsubishi Power’s noteworthy foray into the global market continues to gain momentum. Recently, they secured a contract with Sinohydro Corp. for the delivery of an M701F gas turbine and a steam turbine to a combined-cycle power plant in Sarawak, Malaysia, designed to generate 500 MW. This plant represents another significant step in the bid to incorporate hydrogen fuel, demonstrating the versatility and scalability of Mitsubishi’s technology.

What sets the M701F apart is its capability to co-fire with up to 30% hydrogen fuel, indicating a strong commitment to integrating cleaner energy solutions into traditional power generation methodologies. Furthermore, the deal includes a long-term service agreement with PETROS, the project’s developer, ensuring sustained performance and reliability post-commercial operation.

As Mitsubishi Generator Co., established in April 2024, gears up to manufacture generators for the GTCC plant, it is clear that Mitsubishi Power is not just a player; it’s positioning itself as a leader in the evolving energy landscape. With additional commitments to supply auxiliary equipment and provide technical support for installation and commissioning, the company is set to enhance energy security and capacity for Northern Sarawak’s future energy demand.

As we delve deeper into the advancements in energy technology, it’s evident that the adoption of hydrogen-ready systems, coupled with a commitment to efficiency and sustainability, is set to transform the energy sector. Whether in the deserts of Saudi Arabia or the jungles of Malaysia, the shift toward cleaner energy practices is not just desired; it’s inevitable.

With the global energy landscape continuously evolving, the initiatives taken by companies like Mitsubishi Power are not only commendable but essential. As we monitor these developments, they will undoubtedly shape the future of energy production, making it cleaner, more efficient, and significantly more responsive to the challenges of climate change.
