Introduction of the First-Ever MS Helpline in the UAE: A Landmark Initiative for Multiple Sclerosis Support

In a significant stride toward improving healthcare accessibility for individuals living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in the United Arab Emirates, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) has introduced the MS Helpline, a dedicated service aimed at providing comprehensive information and support regarding MS management. This initiative is a part of a broader commitment to enhance healthcare resources for affected individuals and their families.

The MS Helpline, which can be reached at 800 677, stands as the first telephone-based support service targeting the MS community in the UAE. This innovative platform will provide crucial resources ranging from referrals to specialist clinics to mental health assessments, all tailored to the specific needs of those managing this complex and often isolating condition. The helpline operates daily from 10 AM to 10 PM, ensuring that support is available outside of conventional working hours, thereby addressing a critical gap in services for patients and caretakers alike.

Comprehensive Support Structure

As outlined by His Excellency Ahmed Taleb Al Shamsi, CEO of the Emirates Foundation and Vice Chair of NMSS, the UAE leadership’s priority is to advance healthcare for all citizens. Al Shamsi emphasized the goal of the NMSS to improve access to essential medical services for individuals living with MS. With the introduction of the MS Helpline, the organization aims to simplify the process by which patients and caregivers can obtain actionable information and assistance to navigate the complexities of MS management.

Al Shamsi stated, “This helpline represents a regional first in terms of dedicated MS support. We eagerly anticipate further enhancing this service based on valuable feedback from the MS community, as we progress into its next phase.” The NMSS aims to leverage this feedback to continuously improve the helpline and adapt to the evolving needs of the community.

Strategic Partnerships and Community Commitment

The establishment of the MS Helpline is made possible through significant partnerships, notably with Mubadala and its foundation, alongside M42, the latter being integral in operationalizing the service. Mansour Ahmed Al Ketbi, Deputy Chief Corporate and Human Capital Officer at Mubadala, reaffirmed their commitment to ongoing research funding over the next three years to support the helpline. He stated, “Our collaboration with NMSS and Ma’an highlights our unwavering dedication to social initiatives that drive positive community outcomes.”

Al Ketbi underlined the importance of enhancing the quality of life for those impacted by MS, ensuring they have both the necessary resources and support to effectively manage their condition.

Hasan Jasem Al Nowais, Managing Director and Group Chief Executive Officer at M42, emphasized the role of the helpline in mitigating feelings of isolation prevalent in those living with MS. “This helpline will directly address individuals’ unique needs and concerns,” he remarked. “By offering personalized guidance and support, we hope to assist them in leading fulfilling lives while alleviating anxiety associated with MS.”

Alignment with National Objectives

The MS Helpline also aligns with the initiatives of the National MS Coalition, announced by the NMSS on World MS Day in May 2024. The coalition’s mission is to implement a cohesive national agenda regarding MS, which includes fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and establishing formal frameworks that align with the NMSS’s objectives. These aims highlight a concerted effort to improve the lives of individuals impacted by MS across the nation.

The introduction of this pioneering service is a testament to the UAE’s dedication to healthcare innovation and community support. By addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by those living with MS, the NMSS is paving the way for a more informed and supportive ecosystem. The MS Helpline, with its potential for continuous growth and enhancement, stands to significantly transform the landscape of healthcare services for individuals with chronic conditions in the region.

This important development not only provides immediate relief to those affected but also emphasizes the vital role of community and collaboration in tackling significant healthcare challenges. As the NMSS continues to evolve its services, the hope is for a lasting impact that resonates well beyond the initial launch, fostering a culture of care, support, and shared knowledge amongst all stakeholders in the MS journey.
