The Ministry of Culture in the United Arab Emirates has recently unveiled the findings of the 2023 UAE National Reading Index, a comprehensive survey designed to track reading habits and preferences in the country. The main objective behind this biennial survey is to support the nation’s ambitious goal of making reading an integral part of daily life by the year 2026.
The survey was conducted in collaboration with the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre and involved an extensive sample size, including over 3,800 citizens and residents, 150 writers, over 1,700 students, and more than 3,900 teachers and parents. These diverse participants provided valuable insights into the reading landscape in the UAE.
One of the key findings of the survey was the increase in the average number of books read per person annually. In 2023, the average number rose to seven books per person, up from six in 2021. This uptick in reading activity is a positive sign for the nation’s efforts to promote a culture of reading among its population.
Another interesting trend highlighted in the survey was the growing use of social media platforms for reading purposes. The percentage of readers utilizing social media sites for reading increased to 90.4% in 2023, compared to 88.1% in 2021. This shift indicates a shift in reading habits towards digital platforms.
When it comes to the sources for obtaining books, the survey revealed a diversification in preferences. In 2023, 53.4% of participants reported purchasing books online, 27.6% bought books at book fairs, 28.3% from bookstores, 18.6% borrowed books, and 7.7% obtained books from other sources. These figures represent a significant shift from the distribution in 2021, showcasing a broader range of options for book acquisition.
Mubarak Al Nakhi, the Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, emphasized the importance of the UAE National Reading Index in promoting cultural enrichment and knowledge development. He mentioned how intellectual growth plays a crucial role in sustainable development and positions the UAE as a hub for knowledge and cultural diversity.
Hanan Ahli, the Managing Director of the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre, highlighted the survey’s adherence to international standards in providing accurate and comprehensive data on reading habits and cultural development within the community. The robust data collected offers valuable insights into the evolving reading landscape in the UAE.
Language preferences also emerged as a significant aspect of the survey findings. In 2023, 51% of participants reported a preference for reading in English, while 24.6% read exclusively in Arabic. Additionally, 12.4% read in both Arabic and other languages, with smaller percentages opting for French or other languages. These preferences reflect the linguistic diversity among readers in the UAE.
The survey also delved into the reasons for reading among participants. In 2023, 53.5% of readers indicated reading for enjoyment, while 50.5% read for information, 24.3% for professional purposes, and 31% cited a suitable reading environment as a motivating factor. These motivations provide insights into the multifaceted reasons behind reading habits in the country.
On the topic of literature perception, the survey revealed a decline in the percentage of writers and authors who believe that Emirati literature accurately reflects the cultural and societal landscape. Despite this decrease, the majority of writers and authors still endorse the importance of translating and critiquing Emirati literature to foster wider readership, maintaining a high level of support from the previous index.
In conclusion, the 2023 UAE National Reading Index offers a comprehensive overview of the reading habits, preferences, and perceptions of readers in the country. The findings not only shed light on the evolving reading landscape but also underscore the importance of promoting a culture of reading for both personal enrichment and societal development. As the nation works towards its goal of making reading a fundamental part of daily life, initiatives like this survey play a vital role in shaping future strategies and initiatives to encourage a love for reading among the residents of the UAE.
