Sharjah’s Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi Unveils Significant Heritage Projects in Khorfakkan

On a momentous Monday, His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated two pivotal cultural projects: the revitalization of the old Zubarah neighbourhood and the Shees heritage project in Khorfakkan. This initiative aims to preserve the rich architectural and cultural heritage of these areas by thoughtfully restoring buildings recognized for their historical and social significance.

During his visit to the old Zubarah neighbourhood, Sheikh Sultan conducted a detailed inspection of its key components, which include the grand mosque, a guesthouse, and the governor’s residence. Notably, the area also features four houses that incorporate storerooms, multipurpose halls, and cranes, designed with sloping roofs—a practical architectural response to the region’s heavy rainfall during certain seasons. Such design not only showcases the ingenuity of traditional building techniques but also serves as a reflection of the community’s adaptive strategies to environmental challenges.

In addition to these structures, Sheikh Sultan explored various houses that have been transformed into artisan centres. These centres encapsulate the region’s marine and agricultural heritage—an acknowledgment of the local communities whose livelihoods have historically depended on these sectors. The cultural heritage house, restoration house, and honey house are among the key facilities that provide a space for both the preservation and promotion of traditional crafts.

During his tour, Sheikh Sultan engaged with artisans and organizers to understand the range of activities offered within these facilities. The projects emphasize the revival of traditional professions, with workshops dedicated to weaving, embroidery, spinning, sewing, and the intricate arts of incense and perfume making. Additionally, the local fabric of cultural activities has been enriched through community involvement in drawing, reading sessions, and various workshops designed to foster creativity and connection among residents.

The restoration process highlighted during this visit commenced its first phase in 2023, wherein all structures within the old neighbourhood underwent rehabilitation efforts. Sheikh Sultan was briefed on the ambitious scope of the second phase, which includes work on an ancient settlement nestled by the mountains. This phase of the project aims to unpack the historical narratives of the area further, ensuring the preservation of 11 historic wells while also enhancing visitor experience through aesthetic lighting and parking facilities.

Continuing his assessment, Sheikh Sultan next traveled to the Shees area, where he unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the launch of the Shees heritage project. This project encompasses a theatre poised against a stone backdrop, complete with a stage and backstage facilities, as well as an expansive celebration square designed to accommodate over 200 visitors. Additionally, specialized halls have been crafted to display the heritage and artifacts from the Shees area, along with models of traditional homes and majales—gathering places central to local culture.

A particularly noteworthy aspect of the Shees initiative is its integration of a library and café that not only serves culinary delights but also acts as a cultural hub. The establishment showcases stories, tales, and various literary texts in an innovative format that celebrates local heritage within its interior design, further enhancing the visitor experience through comfortable seating arrangements and captivating views of the Wadi Shees and surrounding mountains.

Throughout his visits to these significant sites, Sheikh Sultan was accompanied by a distinguished entourage, including Eng. Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, Chairman of the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority; Abdullah Ibrahim Al Zaabi, Chairman of the Department of Human Resources; Dr. Abdulaziz Al Musallam, Chairman of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage; and Mohammed Obaid Al Zaabi, Head of the Protocol and Hospitality Department, among other officials and dignitaries.

This ambitious undertaking by His Highness reflects a broader commitment to cultural preservation and community engagement within the emirate. By revitalizing historical sites and promoting traditional crafts, Sharjah not only safeguards its cultural identity for future generations but also fosters a sense of pride and continuity among its residents.
