UAE's Leadership in Climate Action and Water Security Highlighted at World Green Economy Summit 2025

The city of Dubai served as a pivotal stage for global dialogue on climate action and water security as it hosted the World Green Economy Summit (WGES) 2025. This high-profile event convened international leaders, policy-makers, and sustainability experts to discuss pressing environmental challenges and innovative solutions. Among the esteemed figures present was Abdulla Balalaa, the Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability Affairs of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), who played a vital role in two significant ministerial sessions.

Balalaa’s participation epitomized the UAE’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and climate leadership, especially as the nation gears up for COP30 and the forthcoming 2026 UN Water Conference. His contributions at the Ministerial Roundtable on ‘Delivering Climate Ambition by 2030 and Beyond’ focused on the urgent necessity for a shift from mere agreements to actionable and accelerated climate strategies. He articulated a poignant message that the decisions made today would have profound implications for generations to come.

A key element of Balalaa’s address was the UAE’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), submitted in November 2024. This document aligns with the country’s ambitious Net Zero by 2050 strategy and draws from insights garnered from the Global Stocktake and the consensus achieved during COP28. The updated NDC serves as a roadmap for the UAE’s transition toward a sustainable future and underscores its dedication to international climate commitments.

To bolster this transition, Balalaa outlined several transformative initiatives spearheaded by the UAE government. He discussed the establishment of the US billion Alterra Fund, a robust financial mechanism aimed at fostering sustainable development. Furthermore, he announced the AED 1 trillion sustainable finance initiative by the UAE Banks Federation, which seeks to mobilize private capital towards green projects and climate action.

Equally noteworthy was the Africa Green Investment Initiative, which aims to deploy 15 gigawatts of clean energy across the continent by 2030. Such initiatives not only highlight the UAE’s proactive approach to climate action but also emphasize the importance of international collaboration in combating climate change.

Balalaa’s involvement extended beyond climate action; he also addressed the pressing matter of water security during a session titled ‘On the Road to the 2026 UN Water Conference.’ He asserted the necessity for global cooperation to secure water resources amidst increasingly dire forecasts regarding global water scarcity. Partnering with Senegal in this endeavor, the UAE is positioning itself as a leader in facilitating discussions that align with the six UN-adopted Interactive Dialogue Themes surrounding water. These themes stress the vital role water plays not only in environmental sustainability but also in driving economic and social advancement.

In his closing remarks, Balalaa emphasized that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—specifically SDG 6 on Clean Water and Sanitation and SDG 13 on Climate Action—hinges on the establishment of inclusive partnerships, the harnessing of innovative technologies, and the channeling of investments toward sustainable infrastructure. This holistic approach, he argued, is essential to fostering resilience and ensuring socioeconomic prosperity on a global scale.

As the UAE continues to set the pace for climate action and water security, the discussions emerging from the World Green Economy Summit serve as a clarion call for nations worldwide. They underscore the urgency for immediate and cooperative action in addressing climate and resource challenges, framing the forthcoming conferences as critical opportunities for transformative change.

The commitment demonstrated by the UAE not only exemplifies its leadership on the global stage but also reflects a growing recognition of the interconnectedness of climate initiatives and water security. As the world grapples with escalating environmental crises, it becomes increasingly evident that collaboration, innovation, and long-term investment will be crucial in shaping a sustainable future.
