IDEX 2025: An Unprecedented Start to the UAE's Premier Defence Exhibition
The International Defence Exhibition (IDEX) and the Naval Defence Exhibition (NAVDEX) 2025 commenced on a triumphant note, with the signing of 13 contracts amounting to AED 3.97 billion (approximately .08 billion) on its opening day. This year’s exhibition, taking place at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), marks a significant milestone for the UAE as it continues to solidify its prominence in the global defence sector.
The contracts were brokered by the Tawazun Council, a pivotal government authority tasked with overseeing procurement and contract management for the UAE’s Ministry of Defence and affiliated security agencies. This entity plays a critical role in the strategic procurement decisions that shape the country’s defence capabilities, working collaboratively with both local and international firms to fortify the UAE’s military readiness.
Of the total contracts signed, AED 3.825 billion was attributed to local agreements, highlighting the robust capabilities and innovations of Emirati companies. Notable contracts were secured with several leading firms, such as International Golden Group, EDGE Group, Thales Emarat Technologies, Al Masaood, National Marine Dredging Company, Global Aerospace Logistics, Calidus Land Systems, and Injazat Data Systems. These partnerships underscore the UAE’s commitment to enhancing its domestic defence ecosystem, fostering local expertise, and reducing reliance on foreign technology.
International participation also played a critical role in this year’s opening day, with contracts totaling AED 143.4 million. Partnerships were established with prominent global firms, including Finland’s Patria Land Systems, Germany’s Rheinmetall Electronics, Switzerland’s Rheinmetall Air Defence, and the American company Maxar Intelligence. These contracts not only reflect the UAE’s strategic intent to diversify its capabilities through international collaboration but also signify trust and interest from leading global defence firms in the Emirati market.
The 17th edition of IDEX is being heralded as the largest in the event’s storied history, a fact that is particularly evident given the extensive representation of global defence companies and military officials present. The exhibition features 1,565 companies from 65 nations, marking an impressive 16% increase in participation compared to the last edition. Additionally, the total exhibition space has expanded by 10%, covering an area of 181,501 square meters, accommodating this surge in interest and participation.
A remarkable 731 companies are participating for the first time, indicating a notable 82% increase in new entrants to the exhibition. This influx of fresh talent and innovative solutions underscores the vibrancy of the global defence industry and its continuous evolution in response to emerging threats and technological advancements. Furthermore, 213 UAE-based entities represent 16% of the total exhibitors, emphasizing the growth trajectory of the UAE’s defence manufacturing and services sector.
Adding to the significance of IDEX 2025, seven countries—Qatar, Ethiopia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, and Cyprus—are participating for the first time. Their debut underscores the increasing global interest in the UAE’s defence sector and its capacity to act as a platform for international collaboration.
His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister of the UAE, officially inaugurated this landmark event. His remarks highlighted the UAE’s commitment to enhancing its position on the world stage as a leader in the defence and security arena. He credited the visionary leadership of President HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for transforming IDEX into one of the foremost defence exhibitions globally.
As IDEX 2025 unfolds, the convergence of international partnerships, local innovations, and high-level discourse among decision-makers promises to fulfill the exhibition’s aim of redefining the future of defence. This platform not only showcases cutting-edge technologies but also fosters dialogues essential for collaborative solutions to contemporary defence challenges.
This year’s edition signifies a future where security and defence capabilities are underpinned by strong local foundations, complemented by global expertise—a blueprint for resilience in an increasingly complex world.
