In a captivating homage to one of the Arab world’s most revered cultural figures, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi hosted an enchanting concert featuring the Tunisian-Belgian singer Ghalia Benali on Wednesday evening. This event not only celebrated the indelible legacy of the legendary Umm Kulthum but also marked a significant acknowledgment of women’s achievements across education, research, and the arts.
The audience, which exceeded 450 attendees, gathered at the university’s Zayed Theatre and included prominent figures such as Noura Al Kaabi, Minister of State at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Sheikha Alia bint Khalid Al Qassimi, Managing Director of the UAE National Orchestra. Their presence underscored the importance of this gathering, both as a tribute to Umm Kulthum and a celebration of women’s roles in cultural development.
Accompanied by a talented ensemble featuring Moufadhel Adhoum on oud, Khaled Abouhegaze on drums, and Vincent Noiret on cello, Benali delivered an immersive musical experience that resonated deeply with the audience. Known for her emotive voice and profound interpretation of both traditional and contemporary styles, Benali’s artistry encompasses a diverse array of influences, including Arabic classical music fused with flamenco, jazz, and world music.
Benali, who was born in Belgium yet raised in Tunisia, has long held a profound reverence for Umm Kulthum, the iconic Egyptian singer whose emotive songs have transcended generations. Reflecting on her childhood memories, Benali remarked, “I felt as though Umm Kulthum was my grandmother. Her presence resonated in my home through her music and the countless photos that adorned our walls. She is one of us.”
Throughout the concert, Benali paid tribute to Umm Kulthum’s artistry by performing excerpts of her classic Arabic poetry alongside beloved Egyptian songs, each note infused with personal passion and reverence. As she poignantly expressed, “I am not merely singing for Umm Kulthum. I am narrating her story through her songs, sharing what she imparted to me—what has become intrinsically woven into my being. When I sing her songs, I return to my roots, as if yearning to speak to my grandmother.”
The nostalgic atmosphere of the evening permeated the audience, many of whom actively engaged in the performance, singing along with Benali and warmly applauding her efforts. One devoted fan, Salem, who has followed Benali’s career for over two decades in Tunisia, praised her distinct take on Umm Kulthum’s music, stating, “Using just the oud, percussion, and cello, she created an unforgettable performance.”
Manon Al Hakim, Chief of Staff at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, highlighted the concert’s alignment with the university’s mission of empowering women. She noted, “Celebrating an icon who was audacious in her choices and cherished by the public sends a powerful message to our students about the influential roles that women can occupy in society and the importance of pursuing their aspirations in an ever-evolving world.”
Perhaps the evening’s most poignant moment came with the official renaming of the university’s Oval Room to Umm Kulthum Hall. This gesture recognizes the lasting impact of Umm Kulthum as a cultural and artistic beacon, cementing her place not only in the annals of music but also within the very fabric of Arab heritage.
The fusion of rich musical heritage with contemporary expression, as exemplified by Ghalia Benali, underscores a vital narrative about women’s leadership and cultural contribution in today’s society. As this tribute resonated through the walls of Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, it served not only as a celebration of a remarkable artist but also as a testament to the enduring legacy of female creativity and empowerment within the arts.
This exceptional evening stands as a reminder of the power of music and its capacity to bridge generations, cultures, and stories, allowing the spirit of Umm Kulthum to thrive within the voices of modern artists like Benali.
