Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority Initiates Major Revamp of Al Qudra Street
In a significant stride toward urban development and traffic management, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has secured a contract for the Al Qudra Street Development Project, a comprehensive initiative aimed at transforming the key thoroughfare into a more efficient artery for both residents and visitors alike. The project, which represents an investment of approximately Dhs798 million, is poised to enhance the flow of traffic, thereby addressing the emirate’s escalating urban challenges amid swift population growth and increasing economic activity.
The Al Qudra Street Development Project will stretch from the critical intersection at Al Qudra Street with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, extend through Sheikh Zayed Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street, and conclude at Emirates Road. The scope of this initiative includes the development of several interchanges, the construction of over 2,700 meters of bridges, and the widening of existing road segments by 11.6 kilometers. This comprehensive expansion signifies a robust response to the mounting demands on the city’s infrastructure.
Key among the project’s goals is the enhancement of travel times, which are set to decrease dramatically from an average of 9.4 minutes to an impressive 2.8 minutes. Designed to accommodate the movement of an estimated 400,000 residents and tourists, this ambitious undertaking aims to bolster Dubai’s position as a leading global destination while catering to its rapidly growing residential areas.
Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and Chairman of the RTA, emphasized the strategic importance of the project, stating that it represents a crucial addition to the vertical (East-West) road network, facilitating better connectivity to several key development zones, including Arabian Ranches 1 and 2, Dubai Motor City, Dubai Studio City, Akoya, Mudon, DAMAC Hills, and The Sustainable City. His assertion underscores a clear link between infrastructural enhancements and urban vitality.
“Al Qudra Street Development Project is one of the major projects undertaken by RTA to enhance the vertical road network,” Al Tayer noted. “This will alleviate congestion and optimize traffic flow at key intersections, further supporting urban growth and stimulating economic activity.”
The breadth of improvements includes an upgrade at the crucial intersection of Al Qudra Street with the connecting road, which links Arabian Ranches and Dubai Studio City. A substantial feature of this upgrade is the construction of a 600-meter bridge designed to accommodate four lanes in each direction. This modification is projected to increase the road’s capacity significantly, allowing it to handle approximately 19,200 vehicles per hour — a remarkable increase from the current capacity of 6,600 vehicles per hour. The anticipated reduction in waiting times at this intersection from 113 seconds to just 52 seconds is expected to greatly improve overall traffic efficiency.
Additionally, the project incorporates a 700-meter bridge to upgrade the Al Qudra Street and Sheikh Zayed Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street intersection, featuring seven lanes in both directions. Auxiliary lanes for side ramps will further facilitate smooth transitions in all directions, ensuring the main traffic flow remains uninterrupted. A 500-meter bridge will also be erected to improve traffic flow heading from Al Qudra Street towards Jebel Ali, while a separate 900-meter bridge will serve those heading towards Downtown Dubai and Dubai International Airport.
Further enhancing regional connectivity, the construction of service roads along both sides of Sheikh Zayed Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street, spanning three kilometers, aims to better link surrounding development projects. This upgrade is on course to boost the intersection’s vehicle capacity from 7,800 vehicles per hour to an impressive 19,400 vehicles per hour, alongside reducing waiting times at the second intersection from 393 seconds to 60 seconds.
In summary, the Al Qudra Street Development Project stands as a testament to the RTA’s commitment to creating a sustainable, efficient transport network capable of meeting the future demands of a rapidly growing city. It underscores the authority’s role in facilitating not just movement, but also economic growth and urban development in Dubai.
This initiative also highlights a broader global trend wherein urban infrastructures are increasingly being tailored to meet the challenges of burgeoning populations, underscoring the necessity for cities to adapt dynamically to ever-changing socioeconomic landscapes. As Dubai continues its upward trajectory, projects like Al Qudra will be vital in maintaining its reputation as a vibrant hub of activity.
